Pyrofine: Is Fever Really Fine? Is Fever Good Or Bad For Your Pets.

Pyrexia or temperature rise, as we refer to it in common terms, is the rise in body temperature above normal. The normal range for body temperature in dogs and cats is usually 100°F to 102°F. Anything above 102° can be referred to as pyrexia or hyperthermia. For temperatures ranging below 100°F, the term hypothermia is used. Our bodies are very well accustomed to adapting their inner core temperature based on the external stimuli and environment for better functioning and for maintaining homeostasis. It is quite normal for a puppy or kitten to have a warmer body temperature as compared to adults. In addition, pets tend to have an increased or decreased rate of metabolism owing to temperature fluctuations, environment and growth stage which invariably affects their body temperature. Therefore, it is quite natural for body temperature to fluctuate, although not beyond a certain permissible range.

So, Is It Fever Or Hyperthermia: Is There A Difference Between The Two?

The answer is, yes, the terms- pyrexia and hyperthermia are used interchangeably but are two totally different processes. Hyperthermia on the one hand refers to HyperRise/Increase and ThermiaTemperature, which is the sudden rise in temperature due to environmental conditions, stress, tremendous exercise etc. Hyperthermia due to exercise generally lasts for a couple of minutes to at the most half an hour. If your pet still continues to be uncomfortable, showing signs of high temperature it may be an indication that something else is at play and it could be fever due to some ongoing pathology.

Here are the classical signs and symptoms you may observe in the case of pyrexia:

  1. Temperature: Usually, the body temperature is noted by taking the rectal temperature. A digital thermometer may be used for this procedure. Your Vet may help you out and teach you the correct manner in which you can easily take your pet’s body temperature at home during odd hours just to be sure of whether or not your pet has a fever.
  1. Lethargy/ Fatigue: If you notice your pet is not being its own fun self and are being lethargic, sluggish, sitting in one corner, hiding, isolating itself, it is quite an evident symptom of some disease process and checking for the body temperature can help you out immensely.
  1. Anorexia: Anorexia is the condition wherein your pet refuses to eat food or drink water. It is usually sometimes gradual, where your pet starts eating lesser quantities of food than usual eventually culminating in total refusal of food and water. This again hints towards the fact that there is some ongoing pathology in the body.
  1. Depression: Isolation, tiredness, sleeping for longer hours, and weakness are all signs of a disease process.
  1. Hyperpnoea/ Hyper Ventilation: Hyperpnoea means an increase in Breathing rate. Due to the increase of body temperaturethere is an increase in breathing rate as the body is trying to get rid of the excess heat through the panting or breathing process.

Other Collateral Signs: usually with infections and inflammatory conditions, such as gastritis, and gastro-enteritis, there are other signs and symptoms which you may observe, for instance, vomiting, diarrhoea and so on.

Reasons For Fluctuations In Temprature: Why Is My Pet Warm?

  1. MetabolismA transient rise in temperature is noted as the metabolism rate increases. Dogs’ normal body temperature is normally on the higher end [100-102 F] as compared to humans, all thanks to metabolism. Dogs’ have a higher rate of metabolism as compared to humans, their heart rate, and growth-rate varies considerably too, which is why the temperature is on the other end of the spectrum.
  1. Age & Growth FactorHave you ever noticed, puppies and kittens are comparatively warmer and better cuddle buddies as compared to adults? But, why do puppies have higher body temperatures? Young Neonates or younger puppies and kittens have a higher body core temperature as compared to adults. Young ones have a higher body fat percentage, which helps them to maintain their body temperature properly and they can adapt aptly to environmental fluctuations. On the flip side, adults comparatively have less fat, better metabolism and adequate adjustments are made automatically owing to the haemostasis process. Thereby, age does play a minor role in temperature variations.
  1. StressEmotional trauma, mental agony and anxiety can all collectively affect your pets’ health adversely. The exact mechanism is unknown, but stress can raise the body temperature of your pets to a certain extent. For instance, if your pet hates going to the vet, emotional stress may raise their body temperature. Similarly, walking in the sun, during the afternoon hours can cause a condition commonly referred to as ‘Heat Stroke’ if they are subjected to unnecessarily high temperatures for prolonged periods. Heat stroke is also referred to as heat stress and you may notice one or a few of these signs:
  • Panting
  • Excessive Salivation
  • Dry Mucus Membranes
  • Tiredness
  • Fatigued
  • Gasping for Breath
  • Trying to locate a cooler, shadier area
  • Drinking water excessively
  • Trying to lie down on cool surfaces e.g. the floor
  1. Infections: Infections, are the most important cause of high body temperature or pyrexia, commonly called ‘Fever’. Pyrexia on it’s own is not a bad phenomenon. However, excessively high temperature for extended periods of time has it’s own adverse effects. A rise in temperature is an important event during infections as it hints towards the fact that the body is actively fighting against some external pathogens. Therefore, at first, a rise in temperature is usually speculated to be caused due to an active infection ongoing in the body.

Here are few undesired side effects of pyrexia-

  • Fever causes an increase in oxygen consumption along with an increased carbon dioxide thereby affecting normal homeostasis.
  • There is an increase in energy consumption, resulting in hastened metabolism, which causes an increase in cardiac output.
  • Appetite is deranged and dullness is evident.
  • With excess of high temperature, there are chances of multiple organ failure insevere cases.
  1. Inflammatory Conditions: Inflammation usually follows any infection, which again causes pyrexia, pain, redness at the site of inflammation, swelling, and rise in temperature at the site of inflammation as well as temporary loss of function in the affected region. Inflammatory conditions such as Hepatitis, Pancreatitis, Gastro-Enteritis, etc can cause pyrexia to a certain extent.
  1. FUO: Fever of Unknown Origin or FUO is the term used when the underlying cause of fever is not readily identified. Specific Diagnostic tests are carried out to rule out various causes of pyrexia and then establish a firm confirmed diagnosis that helps immensely in sketching out the treatment plan for our pets.
  1. Other Miscellaneous Reasons for Pyrexia:
  • Immune Mediated Processes such as Auto-Immunity, Hypersensitivity, etc.
  • Neoplastic Conditions [Cancer/Chemotherapy]
  • Allergic Response.

Diagnosing Fever: Causes And Reasons.

Usually, fever is just an indication or a hint towards some ongoing issue within the body. For example, if your pet is throwing up, passing semi-solid or liquid faeces along with high rectal temperature, your vet may suggest certain tests, and certain procedures figure out the causative agent. For Gastritis associated fever and related signs, your vet may suggest certain tests like Blood pictures, X-rays to rule out foreign body or impaction cases, USG or ultrasonography and related testing procedures. It is very important for you to approach a veterinarian at the earliest so that the diagnosis and the treatment protocol are initiated at the earliest.

Diagnosis becomes easier with diagnostic tools, and this in turn helps us to treat the pet effectively and efficiently ensuring that no time is wasted and the treatment protocol is initiated at the earliest. To ensure hastened recovery, it becomes very important to diagnose the pet at the earliest.

In short, Quick Diagnosis = Quicker Recovery = Happy Pets!

The Way Out: Managing

Pet Off Feed: Pentoff Is What You Seek

Good food accounts for a good mood. Food has an important place in the lives of all that is living. Food drives us, and provides us with the energy to carry out our day to day activities. But sometimes, when pets’ tend to fall sick, or feel a-bit-under the weather, they end up refusing food. This refusal of food is not always a mood-based thing. Yes, some furry paws are extremely picky with respect to their food habits and will eat only those kinds of food items that suit their palate better. However, it’s not that difficult to figure out whether or not your pet is a fussy eater or they’re sick. Whenever your dog is sick, it will be anorexic. Anorexia is a medical terminology that refers to the disinterest shown by pets toward food.

What’s Normal And What’s Not?

Puppies tend to eat small bite size food every couple of hours. On the other hand, adults tend to eat twice or thrice a day. Good digestion not only involves the digestion- excretion process but also involves the emotional aspect, the anticipation aspect and the hunger aspect. When one or more than one of these intertwined processes is hampered, the entire digestion process gets affected. Anorexia is one such condition, wherein the anticipation-will aspect is hampered due to some ongoing medical/emotional condition. Let’s understand more about anorexia.

Anorexia: What Is It?

Your pet starts anticipating food when the usual feeding time arrives. When they observe their food bowl is filled with yummy treats and snacks, the fun ride of ‘Joy Train’ Tail wags, puppy eyes, and happy dance begins! No matter how repetitive the menu is, dogs and cats still fawn over and love to eat their favourite gravy and kibbles every day while cherishing it to their heart’s content.

The exact opposite of this is Anorexia.

Anorexia is defined as the complete disinterest shown by pets toward food.

There is little to no will to eat their usual favourite food. There are happy days and there are those gloomy days when your pet straight off refuses to eat food or drink water. This is driven by emotional and mental aspects. However, this is also largely dependent upon certain physical parameters such as health, disease status, immunity status and so on.

Anorexia has two types.

1. True Anorexia

In this type of anorexia, there is a total lack of hunger, lack of thirst and there is absolutely no will to eat. This type of anorexia is pretty much common in cases of inflammation, some sort of chronic disease, chronic pain, dental problems, and cancer.

Here are a few examples of cases where anorexia may be observed-

  1. Suppose there is an inflammation of the mouth cavity, due to any reasons. This is medically termed Stomatitis. This could occur due to some injury such as abrasion, cuts, burns due to hot food, etc.
  1. Gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums, causes excruciating pain while chewing and swallowing, making pets anorexic to a certain extent
  1. In cats, teeth problems are not that uncommon. The common reason behind this is due to a virus known as calicivirus, which causes swelling and reddening of the gums. This accounts for loose teeth, swelling and reddening of the gum sockets, causing intense pain while eating and chewing. Teeth loose their normal quality of grinding and chewing and thus, dental extraction is one of the ways to solve this problem.
  1. For cases of cancer, and chronic pain, there is no to very little will to drink water or eat food.

2. False Anorexia

False Anorexia is a condition wherein there is a will to eat, mentally the dog wants to eat, but is not eating optimally, or is not eating at all.

Here are a few signs-

The dog/cat tries to go near the food bowl.

The pet is drinking water but refusing solid food.

Pet goes near the food and water bowl and sits there anticipating food but is unable to eat.

Pet accepts your offer for food but then refuses to eat it.

Your pet is unable to eat due to some ongoing pathology such as infections.

Here are a few conditions which make your pet anorectic.

  1. Infection

Infection caused by a foreign antigen such as bacteria, viruses, or protozoa makes your pet nauseous. Concurrent signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and feeling low mentally all add up to fuel anorexia.

Liver infection/Inflammation such as hepatitis or kidney disease affects many different systems of the body culminating in anorexia, weakness and a further chain of events that starts spiralling down.

  1. Psychology

Stress, mental agony, hurt, emotional triggers all such psychological events can result in pets refusing to eat food. Sudden environmental changes, traveling, and transportation all can collectively add up and your pet might refuse to eat food for a while.

  1. Other possible reasons include- Toxins ingestion

Temperature fluctuations and changes

Medication side effects

Overall, pseudo anorexia is due to some secondary reason, collateral to some ongoing underlying issue which is not intially the cause of total inappetance and anorexia.

Inappetance Or Anorexia : How To Figure It Out?

Technically speaking, there are various levels of anorexia and inappetence.

Let us understand the difference between anorexia and inappetence.

Inappetance refers to the lack of appetite for a short duration of time. At the same time, anorexia is the consistent lack of appetite where your pet consistently refuses to eat food and starts losing weight. Anorexia is usually a prequel to and collateral of many different kinds of pathologies. Eating food and cherishing it, are two different yet intertwined entities. Hunger on the one hand is physically driven, whereas appetite is usually a mentally driven aspect. Your stomach rumbles a little, and gurgles a bit when you see a delicious food item, however only when your brain captures the food with the sensory organs such as eyesight, and smell, the physical process of digestion begins. However, the anticipation of food is equally important in triggering the food mechanism. And thus, we can easily conclude the fact that, yes, hunger and appetite are both different sides of the same coin and are related to each other closely.

What To Do In Case Of Anorexia?

Anorexia is always a symptom rather than a disease entity in itself. Always remember that anorexia is a secondary event in the course of events. Anorexia is not disease specific but is almost always present in cases of infections, inflammation and so on. Therefore, the main aim is to correct the underlying cause.

If the underlying cause of anorexia is infectious – Treatment includes treating the infection by giving specific antibiotics, supportive therapy etc.

If the underlying cause of anorexia is physical stress or mental stress – treatment includes providing the pet with a stress free environment, taking care of their emotional needs, taking them out for a walk, playing with them, etc.

If the underlying cause of anorexia is established as cancer, or other pathological conditions – the treatment protocol involves resolving these issues.

Anorexia can be managed effectively with concurrent management of the surrounding collateral disease process. PENTOFF DROPS is a homeopathic formulation exclusively for pets. It is very effective and efficient in improving anorexia in dogs and cats which could be due to any of the underlying causes like fever, vomitions, diarrhea, deficiency, anemia, anxiety, constipation, liver problems, or any unknown acute or chronic illness, etc.

Homeopathic remedies work on the principle of “similiasimilibuscuranter” which means “like cures like”, so is our PENTOFF, a superb homeopathic formulation exclusively for pets. It is very effective and efficient in improving anorexia in dogs and cats, maybe due to any of the underlying causes like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, deficiency, anemia, anxiety, constipation, liver problems, or any unknown acute or chronic illness, etc.

Anorexia therefore, as such, is not a disease process but is a PART of the ongoing disease process. To approach this in a 360° manner is important to help our pets recover better and resume their normal habits and rituals.

Happy Pets for a happy you.

Everything’s Fine With Diafine

The gurgles of indigestion and inappetence are probably one of the worst duos a pet parent may ever encounter. Indigestion is something, which may look not so scary but is equally intimidating for any pet parent as it is unusual for us to see our pets’ not at- at-their-best. Diarrhoea, well, that is one of the forerunners in the marathon of signs and symptoms for any disease. In today’s Blog, let us uncover some myths, some facts, some interesting lesser-known things, and some FAQs regarding indigestion and diarrhoea.

What Is Diarrhoea?

Diarrhoea is defined as the frequent passing of loose, watery and unformed faeces. The normal texture of faeces is brownish with a firm consistency, and any deviation from the standard form with a recurrent tendency can be termed diarrhoea. Diarrhoea in itself is not a disease but is simply an indicator of some ongoing disease process. Let’s put it this way, diarrhoea is not the bigger problem as is treating the underlying issue. Once the underlying health issue is taken care of diarrhoea ceases. It is manifested in the form of loose, unformed, malodorous, watery faeces having abnormal colour. Diarrhoea is almost always the sequel to underlying enteritis. However, there are some other reasons for diarrhoea to manifest itself. Here are a few of the reasons behind diarrhoea:

  • Stress & Strain: Some pets, when under excessive stress, may end up falling sick. The exact reason behind this is yet to be discovered; however, it can be attributed to the fact that stress rapidly causes the decline of immunity. Whenever immunity is low or below a certain threshold level, there is a good enough opportunity for secondary bacterial invaders or pathogens to invade and start colonizing thereby, causing diarrhoea.
  • Food Allergies & IntoleranceFood allergies are rather common in dogs and cats. In fact, did you know, most of our pets are lactose intolerant? Lactose Intolerance is a condition where they cannot effectively digest lactose sugar, which is present in milk. As a result, there is diarrhoea, which is usually limited to post-intake of suspected intolerant food and usually ceases after withdrawal from milk. Similarly, some pets may have a food intolerance and allergies to various kinds of foodstuffs. Some pets are intolerant towards certain types of packaged food, which triggers diarrhoea that ceases post-withdrawal of the offending food.
  • Emotional Causes: Emotional triggers such as nervous excitement, anxiety, separation anxiety, fear of an unaccustomed environment, agony, or unwanted stress and strain may trigger diarrhoeal episodes.
  • Neoplasm induced enteritisSome diarrhoeal episodes may be triggered due to neoplasia or cancer process in the intestines. This may be confused with inflammatory bowel disease however; the difference is that, the former is related to cancerous processes. lymphosarcoma is the top contender for commonly encountered neoplasm associated with diarrhoea. Other neoplasms such as leiomyomas and leiomyosarcoma may also trigger diarrhoea.
  • Auto- Immune Reasons: Auto-immunity is a phenomenon where the immune system of the body attacks its own-cells/tissues due to some cellular/systemic disturbances. Lymphocytic-Plasmacytic enteritis may be evident in such cases of autoimmunity, which is usually characterized by hypo-globulinemia and diarrhoea.
  • Intestinal MotilityDiarrhoea may occur due to rapid movement of the intestine or hyper-peristalsis. There is a fixed pattern in which the intestines contract which helps carry the food items ahead in the alimentary tract. This fixed pattern or rhythmic contractions is termed peristalsis or peristaltic movements. Excessive movement is termed hyper-peristalsis which causes Diarrhoea or semi-solid/ Liquid faeces. On the flip side, constipation is attributed to hypo-peristalsis or slower movements of the intestines. There must be fine balance or homeostasis of the system to ensure there are no diarrhoea or constipation episodes.
  • InfectionDiarrhoea is manifested when some infectious agents attack the digestive system. In a real sense, our gut or intestines are filled with good bacteria which help our body digest better via a process of symbiosis. They help in immunity building as well. However, infections arise whenever there is a decline in the number of good bacterial colonies or there is a rise in pathogenic bacteria. These pathogenic bacteria make their way into the system mostly via the feco-oral route. In case, your pet eats or drinks contaminated food or water, there is always a possibility for them to have a diarrhoeal episode following entry of a foreign pathogen. These pathogens, or bad-bacteria as we may call them, are responsible for colonizing the intestinal cells, sloughing the intestinal membrane wall, etc.
  • Specific causes: Parvovirus infection in puppies is known to cause haemorrhagic gastro-enteritis, which is characterized by diarrhoea that has a peculiar smell and a red-brown tinge. Viral enteritis is very commonly observed in all species. However, bacterial causes for diarrhoea somewhat still stand out. For instance, E.coli and salmonella are notorious for causing enteritis, commonly referred to as food poisoning. Hence, always ensure, your pets do not get access to dumpsters, waste products, stale food, etc. which may have the potential to cause infection.
  • ParasitesParasites are small creatures that feed off their host as they derive nutrition and protection from their particular hosts. Parasitism is a condition wherein there is an excessive parasite load in the body, which can be potentially life-threatening. In cases of young puppies and kittens, parasitism such as tapeworm infection is very common.

Signs and symptoms observed are- listlessness, anorexia, dullness, the pot-bellied appearance of the abdomen, and loose unformed faeces, in spite of having a good diet; the puppy still appears to be weak. You may occasionally observe proglottids of tapeworm in your dog’s faeces which resemble cucumber seeds.

Diagnosing Diarrhoea: What Are The Various Reasons Behind Diarrhoeal Episodes?

Diarrhoea is not a disease process but is a symptom. There can be many reasons behind the diarrhoeal episode. As mentioned above, diarrhoea could be due to something as simple as indigestion to something as complicated as inflammatory bowel disease. Establishing the exact reason behind diarrhoea helps us to treat the main cause behind this and re-establish good gut flora, thereby promoting healthy bowel movements and good gut health. In order to conclude the causative factor, your Vet may suggest a few tests such as-

  1. ROUTINE BLOOD TESTRoutine blood tests help to rule out or rule out many different kinds of disease processes. Basic Blood picture, i.e. complete blood count along with Liver Function Tests and Kidney Function Tests helps to pinpoint whether or not the disease entity lies in the blood (such as haemoprotozoan diseases) Liver or Kidneys (inflammation or toxicity conditions)
  1. USGUSG is an important tool, which helps in the imaging of intestines and better imaging of internal organs. It helps to locate any ulcers, and any changes in the texture, shape, contour, and outline of organs. Through USG, internal organs such as kidneys, intestines, etc can be effectively checked for any lesions.
  1. RADIOGRAPHYIn cases of ingestion of a foreign body, to check or to locate it, radiography can be an effective tool. Mostly, there is vomiting in case of foreign body obstruction.
  1. BIOPSYFor any unknown lesions, intestinal biopsy, or biopsy of mass (in cases of cancer) becomes an important tool to diagnose the particular condition. For Lymphosarcoma, surgery (if it is an option) along with chemotherapy (+/-) becomes an effective tool to control the disease progression.
  2. FAECAL SAMPLEFaecal Sample testing is a standard routine protocol for figuring out the cause of diarrhoeal episodes. Faecal samples are tested for the presence of blood, epithelial cells, protozoan cells, eggs of parasites, or proglottids of tapeworms, etc. This test is routinely carried out to narrow down the differentials, which helps in diagnosing better and rather more effectively.

Management & Therapeutics: Way Forward.

Diarrhoea should always be approached as a symptom rather than an entity of the disease itself. There are ‘N’ a number of triggers that may eventually spiral down to diarrhoea. The treatment protocol should be holistic and must cater to individual needs. For instance, diarrhoea due to parasitism is handled and treated with drugs that work against those individual parasites, and diarrhoea then ceases to be. On the other side, diarrhoea due to infections and inflammatory processes is rather difficult to handle and may require some other form of treatment therapy along with supportive care and management. Every individual is different, and so, treatment protocol greatly varies from patient to patient. Usually, the therapeutic protocol involves fluid therapy to restore the fluid imbalance, antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections, specific antibiotics for certain gastro-intestinal infections such as metronidazole, Ceftriaxone and Tazobactam, etc. other drugs such as motility drugs, etc can be tried. Supportive therapy involves vitamin B complex, vitamin C also, and Vitamin K supplementation in cases of haemorrhagic gastroenteritis.
