Care For Your Dog During Pregnancy

If you think or know your dog is pregnant, visit your veterinarian to discuss her needs. A dog’s pregnancy in dogs is about 63 days long, approximately nine weeks. While you are waiting for the big day to come, it’s important that you take good care of your pregnant dog.

Welcoming a new litter of puppies into the world is very rewarding, but dog pregnancies can be confusing and stressful, as well as time-consuming and costly.

Dr. Sakshi Sharma, MVSc. J&K

If you are considering breeding your dog, there are so many things you need to know. You should be familiar with your breed’s standard and individual breed health test recommendations, as well as the responsibilities. You will also need to know the signs of pregnancy in dogs and how best to care for your pregnant dog signs of dog pregnancy.

It is important to know that diagnostic testing isn’t the only way to determine whether a dog is pregnant, although it is the most accurate. There are other reliable signs of dog pregnancy you can watch for, including:

  • Increase in appetite
  • Weight gain
  • Increase in nipple size
  • Swollen belly
  • Tires more easily
  • Nesting behavior
  • More affectionate
  • Irritability
  • In addition, some dogs may vomit and have a decrease in appetite for a few days in the first few weeks due to changes in hormones.

Besides these signs, here are some important things to remember:

 Pregnancy Nutrition

Dogs need more calories and nutrients while they are pregnant. This is the extra requirement that is used to nourish the growing fetuses. It is best to feed your pregnant dog food that has been formulated for growth requirements. Usually, this means feeding puppy food. By the time she is halfway through her pregnancy, your dog will require roughly twice the calorie intake that she needed before pregnancy. She should continue to eat this diet while she is nursing her puppies. Otherwise, she can go into a negative energy balance.

In general, your dog will not need any special vitamins or supplements while she is pregnant as long as she is getting the proper and balanced diet. However, your veterinarian will make recommendations based on your dog’s individual needs.

Veterinary Care

Your dog will likely need to see the vet a couple of times during her pregnancy. An ultrasound and or blood test can be done as early as 21 days into pregnancy to confirm it. Around 45 days into the pregnancy, your vet can take x-rays to determine the number and size of the pups.

Note: Do not vaccinate your dog during her pregnancy.

If your dog experiences vaginal bleeding or discharge during her pregnancy, you should contact your vet for advice.

If you notice any signs of illness while your dog is pregnant, do not wait to bring her to the vet. Things that can normally wait a few days might be more serious in a pregnant dog. Complications can cause harm to the puppies and the mother dog.

Exercise

Your dog can still exercise during most of her pregnancy but should not do any hard or stressful activities after four to six weeks into the pregnancy. Gentle walks are the best activity for pregnant dogs.

Always contact your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns about your dog’s health.

Preparing for Puppies

As the end of your dog’s pregnancy approaches, you’ll notice a significant enlargement of her breasts and nipples and might even detect some milky fluid as the milk glands develop and enlarge. Her abdomen will increase in size and may sway a little as she walks. At the very end of the pregnancy, you might even be able to see or feel the puppies moving around inside the mother.

By this time, you want to prepare yourself and your dog for whelping or puppy birthing. The best way to do this is to set up a whelping box. Whelping boxes offer a safe, warm, draft-free, easily cleaned location for your dog to have her puppies. There are whelping boxes made that can be purchased, or you can even use a small children’s plastic swimming pool. The whelping box should be easy for the mother, but not the puppies, to get in and out of. Your dog may prefer to have it in a quiet area of the house but in an area that you can have easy access to.

Once you have purchased or built your whelping box, take some time to get your dog accustomed to it. If you don’t introduce her to the whelping box beforehand, she might decide to deliver someplace else.

Whelping or simply dog birth

When your pregnant dog’s time approaches, look for the warning signs of labor. Pregnant mothers may stop eating a few days before whelping and may also start trying to build a “nest” — hopefully in the whelping box.

Many pregnant dogs close to delivery start to pant heavily. A drop in rectal temperature usually precedes delivery by about 8-to-24 hours from a normal temperature (100-to-102.5 degrees Fahrenheit) to 99 degrees or even lower. Many bitches ready to whelp may not eat or eat very little.

Abdominal contractions may begin slowly and gain strength and frequency – sometimes, they’re strongest for the first delivery, accompanied by straining and moaning. You may see the water sac come out when there’s a puppy in the birth canal, and within one hour, the first puppy should be delivered.

Each puppy is born enclosed in its placental membrane, and in each case, the mother licks the puppy vigorously and tears this membrane off, sometimes eating it. If she does not remove it, you will have to do it, as puppies cannot survive for more than a few minutes before their supply of oxygen runs out. You may need to rub the puppy with a clean towel until you hear him cry.

Possible Dog Labour Complications

Sometimes during delivery, things go wrong. If you experience any of these signs, call your veterinarian:

  • Your dog’s rectal temperature dropped more than 24 hours ago, and labor isn’t starting.
  • The mother is exhibiting symptoms of severe discomfort, or if she doesn’t deliver the first puppy 2 hours after contractions begin, especially if she has passed green discharge.
  • More than 2 hours pass in between the delivery of puppies, or your dog experiences strong contractions for an hour without birth or the mother seems exhausted.
  • Trembling, collapsing, or shivering are warning signs of serious complications that could put both the bitch and the puppies at risk.
  • It’s normal for dogs to deliver a dark green or bloody fluid after the first puppy, but if this happens before the first puppy, call the vet.
  • Your dog shows no signs of whelping 64 days after her last mating.
  • All of the placentas aren’t delivered.
  • Puppies aren’t nursing.

Pregnancy can be a stressful time for dogs and owners, but it doesn’t have to be. The more you know about dog pregnancy ahead of time, the better prepared you will be to care for your dog.

The Importance Of Immunity In Pets

joint pain in dog

Immunity, is a word everyone knows about, a word that holds an important core place in our health. The Covid Situation has made all of us very much aware of certain terminologies like Immunity, health, and correlation with the immune system, herd immunity, and its importance in the health and wellbeing sector of our life. Did you know, Immunity is a concept that is applied to our pets as well and is not simply related to humans! Immunity is an umbrella concept that does play a pivotal role in our day-to-day lives.
In today’s blog, we are going to dive into the topic of immunity, what is its importance, and how Immunity plays a massive role in your pet’s life.

Tanvi Shendye, Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS IMMUNITY?

The definition of Immunity is the ability of an organism to resist a particular infection or toxin by the action of specific antibodies or sensitized white blood cells. In simpler terms, Immunity is the ability of your body (or your pet’s body) to fight back an Infection, to kill and remove the disease-causing microorganisms. There are little army or fighter cells called the White Blood Cells, which act as the fighters against any infection. These little fighters are responsible for killing, eating (phagocytosis), and discarding most of the disease-causing microorganisms that invade your body. It is a complex biological system that has the ability to recognize whatever belongs to the self-body and to reject what is foreign to the body (non-self), for example, microbes.

WHAT IS IMMUNITY IN PETS? HOW IS IT BUILT?

Immunity is the body’s natural way to fight and resist infection. It can either be naturally present inside your pet due to genetic factors etc or due to the mother’s Milk or it could be acquired by vaccination or fighting infection. Let’s see what exactly is Innate vs. Acquired Immunity.

  1. INNATE IMMUNITY

Innate Immunity is the type of Immunity that is present right from birth.

It is the inborn resistance mechanism against disease-causing microorganisms and infections that an individual possesses right from birth due to their genetic makeup.

  1. ACQUIRED IMMUNITY

This type of Immunity is, however, adapted or acquired by an organism after birth via vaccines or exposure to microorganisms.

FACTORS AFFECTING IMMUNITY IN PETS.

Immunity and immune response vary a lot from one individual to another, species to species. It’s a perfect amalgamation of genetic factors and environmental factors.

The immune response thus owes a major of its chunk to environmental factors apart from genetic factors. Let’s understand various factors one by one.

Factors influencing Immune Response are :

AGE

Age plays the most important role in the Immunity of pets. Mostly young and old, the extreme ends of the life cycle are particularly vulnerable to infections due to hampered Immunity. Let’s see how.

In young puppies or kittens, there is something called Maternal antibodies, which are present in the Milk of the mother. These antibodies are essential and are meant to protect kittens and puppies from diseases and infections. Thus it’s important to give the puppies and kittens their mother’s milk when they are young. Adequate maternal antibodies are thus essential to prevent severe or chronic illness or death. Mother’s Milk has immunoglobulins (which help in immunity building) which help your pets immensely.

It’s also very important to note here that puppies younger than 45 days should not be weaned as it might cause puppies to have less Immunity. Also, as a vigilant pet parent, it is advisable not to buy puppies and kittens younger than the prescribed age since it’s always better to have pets with good Immunity and health as this will affect your puppies and kitties in the long run.

The younger population of pets like kittens and puppies are at greater risk of infection as they are still building their Immunity up. Certain infections such as Parvo Virus Infection in puppies or Feline Leukemia Virus in kittens are some of the diseases which affect the younger population as compared to the older ones, and this is because the younger animals are more susceptible to infections.

Thus, age here is a crucial factor.

This is why we vaccinate our puppies and kittens from the 6th to 8th week onwards against various organisms like Parvo Virus, Leptospira, Adeno Virus, etc., in puppies through the 9 in 1 Vaccine.

While in cats, we vaccinate them to build up Immunity against Calicivirus, Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), etc.

These vaccinations are initially given at 6th– 7th week onwards, followed by booster doses for the same and then followed by Anti Rabies Vaccine, which again builds up Immunity against the deadly Rabies Virus. This vaccination schedule must be followed as it helps to prevent life-threatening conditions since it helps to build up the Immunity of the animal.

Annual vaccination is thus done to keep the Immunity at a stable level and help your pets to lead a healthy, happy life.

NUTRITION

Nutrition plays a vital role in Immunity. Gut health plays a crucial role in Immunity, as does what your pets eat. A diet rich in optimum levels of minerals, vitamins, fibers, carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, and proteins is important to give your pets all nutrients essential to build up a strong body and Stronger Immunity.

Here are some nutrients which are important for the development of a normal immune response –

Vitamins like: Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, and B vitamins (Vitamin B complex)

Polyunsaturated fatty acids,

Minerals like: Calcium, Copper, Selenium Chromium, Zinc, etc

Many of these nutrients act as antioxidants which have the ability to protect the immune cells from oxidative damage and help in the building of a strong immune system.

STRESS

Stress is one of the factors which hampers the Immunity of your pets.

Sudden stress will lead to the release of adrenaline that will suppress the immune response. Long-term stress causes the release of cortisol, which is also immunosuppressive at high levels.

Any kind of physical or emotional stress affects your pets, for example – a sudden change of atmosphere and environment, severe weather changes (extremely high temperature, extremely low temperature), traveling, excessive handling, trauma, illness, pregnancy, boarding, etc.

HEALTH CARE PRACTICES

If there is poor sanitation or poor Management practices, it might take a toll on the Immunity of your pets.

For example, in the case of kennel cough, your puppy may have been subjected to poor hygiene or an unhealthy atmosphere, such as a dog boarding facility without adequate vaccination or protection against the same.

MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

Exercise plays a huge role in building Immunity in your pets. A series of regular exercises enhances immune response. However, it’s important to note here that over-exertion or Strenuous exercise results in oxidative damage to the cells and will have a backfire effect, increasing the susceptibility to infections. Anything in excess is harmful. Thus, regular walks, and regular exercise are important.
Also, never exercise your pets immediately before or after food as again it will have harmful effects on your pet’s system. Exercise should be moderated and done in proper quantities.
Immunity plays a crucial role in protecting your pet throughout its life. There are many microbes in the environment, and always remember the golden rule – ‘Prevention is better than cure.’
Vaccinate your furry friends routinely, provide them with good nutritious food and supplements, proper exercise, a good environment, happy atmosphere for the overall health and protection of your pet.

The importance of Immunity is immense, as it is important for health and resistance!

Pyometra- An Infection Of Uterus, A Serious Concern And Homeopathic Remedy For Pets

Pyometra is derived from two important terms- “Pyo,” meaning pus, and “metra,” meaning uterus. Thus in its simplest terms, pyometra is an infection of the uterus characterized by the accumulation of pus with the swelling of the walls of the uterus. So, in general, cases of pyometra are much more difficult to manage than a routine infection.

Infection in the lining of the uterus is established as a result of hormonal changes. Following “estrus” or “heat,” progesterone levels remain elevated for 8-10 weeks and thicken the lining of the uterus in preparation for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur for several estrus cycles, the lining continues to increase in thickness until cysts form within it. The thickened, cystic lining secretes fluids that create an ideal environment in which bacteria can grow. Additionally, high progesterone levels inhibit the ability of the muscles in the wall of the uterus to contract. Thus the uterus becomes atonic.

Are there other situations that cause the changes in the uterus of a dog?

The answer to it is yes. The use of progesterone-based drugs can do this. In addition, estrogen will increase the effects of progesterone on the uterus. Drugs containing both hormones are used to treat certain conditions of the reproductive system, thus predisposing the pet to this condition. So it is always advisable to consult a vet before administering any kind of hormonal drugs to your pet.

How do bacteria get into the uterus?

The organ cervix is the gateway to the uterus. It remains tightly closed except during heat. When it is open, bacteria that are normally found in the vagina can enter the uterus very easily. If the uterus is normal, the environment is adverse to bacterial survival; however, when the uterine wall is thickened, and cystic, perfect conditions exist for bacterial growth. In addition, when these abnormal conditions exist, the muscles of the uterus swell and cannot contract properly. This means that bacteria that enter the uterus cannot be expelled.

What are the clinical signs of a dog with pyometra?

The clinical signs depend on whether or not the cervix is open. If it is open, the pus will drain from the uterus through the vagina to the outside. It is often noted on the skin or hair under the tail or on bedding and furniture where the dog has laid. Fever, lethargy, anorexia, thirst, and depression may or may not be present.

If the cervix is closed, the pus that forms is not able to drain to the outside. It collects in the uterus, causing accumulation in the abdomen. The bacteria release toxins, which are absorbed into the circulation. These dogs often become severely ill very rapidly. They are anorectic, very listless, and very depressed. Vomiting or diarrhea may be present.

Toxins from the bacteria affect the kidney’s ability to retain fluid. Increased urine production occurs, and the dog drinks an excess of water. This occurs in both open- and closed-cervix pyometra.

How to know if your dog has pyometra?

Dogs that are seen early in the disease may have a slight vaginal discharge and show no other signs of illness. However, most dogs with pyometra are not seen until later in the illness. A very ill female dog that is drinking an increased amount of water and has not been spayed is always suspected of having pyometra. This is especially true if there is a vaginal discharge or an enlarged abdomen.

Dogs with pyometra have a marked elevation of the white blood cell count and often have an elevation of globulins (a type of protein produced by the immune system) in the blood. The specific gravity of the urine is very low due to the toxic effects of the bacteria on the kidneys. However, all of these abnormalities may be present in any dog with a major bacterial infection.

If the cervix is closed, radiographs (x-rays) of the abdomen will often identify the enlarged uterus. If the cervix is open, there will often be such minimal uterine enlargement that the radiograph will not be reliable. An ultrasound examination can also be helpful in identifying an enlarged uterus and differentiating that from a normal pregnancy.

How is pyometra treated?

The preferred treatment is to surgically remove the uterus and ovaries. This is called an ovariohysterectomy “spaying.” In this procedure, the cystic ovaries along with the pus-filled uterus are removed out of the abdomen to prevent the spread of infection and illness. Dogs diagnosed in the early stage of the disease are very good surgical candidates. The surgery is only slightly more complicated than a routine spay. However, most dogs are diagnosed when they are quite ill, so the surgery is not as routine as the same surgery in a healthy dog. Intravenous fluids are often needed before and after surgery. Antibiotics are given for 1-2 weeks. Postoperative care is equally important.

Can anything else be done for pyometra other than surgery?

There is a medical approach to treating pyometra. Prostaglandins are a group of hormones that reduce the blood level of progesterone, relax and open the cervix, and contract the uterus to expel bacteria and pus. They can be used successfully to treat this disease, but they are not always successful, and they have some important limitations.

  • They cause side effects of restlessness, panting, vomiting, defecation, salivation, and abdominal pain. The side effects occur within about 15 minutes of injection and last for a few hours. They become progressively milder with each successive treatment and may be lessened by walking the dog for about 30 minutes following an injection.
  • There is no clinical improvement for about 48 hours, so dogs that are severely ill are poor candidates.
  • Because they contract the uterus, it is possible for the uterus to rupture and spill infection into the abdominal cavity. This is most likely to happen when the cervix is closed.
  • The chances of subsequent successful breeding following the treatment is 50-75%.

What happens if neither of the above treatments is given?

The chance of successful treatment without surgery or prostaglandin treatment is extremely low. If treatment is not performed quickly, the toxic effects from the bacteria will be fatal. If the cervix is closed, it is also possible for the uterus to rupture, spilling the infection into the abdominal cavity. This will also be fatal.

The Parvo Problem & Homeopathy For Pets

What was the best memory you had of your furry friend? Was it one of those days when your dog was a baby, a small puppy who used to bite you just like a little shark? Or was it, when they used to destroy your furniture and expensive shoes? Remember those times when your puppy used to follow you wherever you went? We had endless beautiful memories of our dog’s childhood when they were little puppies with their beaming eyes ready to run around like crazy and simply jump from one sofa to other, exploring the world! With the perks of enjoying the best days of your dog’s life, there are some days when it felt utterly heartbreaking, those days where when your little puppy was sick. In this blog, let’s dive into a topic that is known to all, a kind-of dangerous condition – Parvo Virus Infection. How does a puppy acquire this infection? What exactly happens? How does it manifest? How can I save my baby from this? Let’s dive straight into today’s topic.

Tanvi Shendye, Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai

WHAT IS PARVO VIRUS?

Canine parvovirus is a very contagious virus mainly affecting dogs. CPV is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their feces.

Synonyms: CPV, CPV-II, or Parvo Virus.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OBSERVED?

Mostly, young puppies are affected worst than the older dogs, and those who may develop the disease show signs of the illness within two to ten days.

Watch out for the common signs-

The signs may include:

  1. lethargy
  2. Persistent Vomiting
  3. Fever body temperature may rise to 103°F -104°F
  4. Coffee-Red coloredDiarrhea (usually shooting type)

Let’s have a look at how exactly these signs and symptoms manifest.
Mostly the first sign of CPV is lethargy. Is your puppy acting a little less active, isolating itself, or sleeping/lying down more? Time to observe closely. If it couples with some other signs, it’s time to take your baby to the doctor quickly.
The next, Secondary signs that you observe are sudden loss of weight, and loss of appetite (anorexia), where your puppy suddenly starts refusing to eat their favorite chew sticks or food. This is followed by episodes of Diarrhea (usually loose stool with bloody tinge) and is coupled with persistent vomiting (frothy white etc.)
Now, the constant Diarrhoea and vomiting will result in dehydration, a fluid imbalance that culminates into electrolyte balance and may affect the dog critically.
All these signs and symptoms severely hamper the immune system of your pet, and as a result, Secondary infections occur as a result of the weakened immune system. Bacterial infections can flare up due to this

Other events which occur inside the body are –

  1. Anemia
  2. Loss of protein
  3. Endotoxemia

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis is usually made in various ways. The primary being-

  1. HISTORY TAKING

It’s essential for you as the pet parent to describe all the signs and symptoms observed and the timeline of the same.

An apt and proper history permits your Doctor to quickly diagnose your furry friend and take the next steps as needed.

  1. TESTS

There are certain tests used for the detection of CPV2 in feces either an ELISA Test or a Haemagglutination test.

ELISA is the rapid test used most often to detect the antigen (virus). Recently, PCR has become available and is the popular choice to diagnose CPV2, which can be used later in the disease when potentially less virus is being shed in the feces that may not be detectable by ELISA.

It’s essential to run these diagnostic tests as Diarrhea and vomiting are very generalized symptoms observed in many different diseases.

The Parvovirus infection can sometimes be confused with coronavirus enteritis or other forms of enteritis.

Thus to be firm and to confirm, it’s important to emphasize here the need for diagnostic tests.

TREATMENT PROTOCOL

Usually, it is Supportive in nature, and the care ideally consists of crystalloid IV fluids, colloids, e.g., Hetastarch, NS, etc. antinausea drugs (antiemetics) such as maropitant, metoclopramide, ondansetron, and some broad-spectrum antibiotic drugs to control the secondary bacterial infections such as cefazolin, enrofloxacin, ampicillin, metronidazole. Other protective and supportive supplements such as Vitamins B-complex vitamins, Iron supplements, etc., are given.

HOW TO SAVE MY FURRY PAW FROM THIS? WHAT OPTIONS DO WE HAVE?

Vaccination

The major step you can take to protect your pet is to vaccinate your pet against these dangerous viruses.
The 9 in 1 vaccine is an important one that covers parvovirus, distemper, etc., harmful viruses which adversely affect the dog. In fact, the 9 in 1 even includes the Leptospira bacteria strains, thus protecting your dog from harmful bacteria and viruses.
This vaccination is generally scheduled from the 6th week to the 8th week post-birth and is followed by a booster dose for the same.
They were then followed by yearly vaccination for the same.

Protect your puppy

Avoid taking your puppy to places where there might be fecal contamination by other dogs or unhygienic places. Dirty places and outdoor environments can harbor many bacteria and viruses, which are a potential threat to your puppy’s life.

As puppies are naturally inquisitive, they tend to explore their surroundings. You, as a vigilant pet parent, have this duty towards your little friend by protecting and limiting your puppy’s exposure to such environments. For the initial few weeks, it’s better to keep your puppies indoors until they are vaccinated or at least till the time they are checked by your Doctor.

If your Vet gives you a thumb’s up for outside walks and plays parks, you’re good to go!

World Homeopathy Awareness Week 2021 – Homeopathy The Roadmap For Integrative Medicine

Homeopathy is one of the many branches of medicine which is also an alternative form of medicine. This medicine system was established in 1700 and was developed in the late 1700s in Germany by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann. The World Homeopathy Awareness Organization created World Homeopathy Awareness Week from April 10th to April 16th. World Homeopathy Day kicks off the week of April 10th, which is Dr. Hahnemann’s birthday. This year on the occasion of World Homeopathy Day, the AYUSH ministry has decided to celebrate the day with the theme- “Homeopathy- Roadmap for Integrative Medicine”.

Integrative medicine approach means that two or more alternative medicine forms along with conventional treatment (allopathy) are used to cure or give relief from medical ailments. As we know due to covid-19 we have started adopting the Ayurvedic approach (like drinking Turmeric milk etc) and the Homeopathic approach (Arsenic Album etc immunity boosters) along with traditional allopathic antibiotics and similar drugs. The future is integrative medicine as this serves to be quick, easy, simple, and do-able along with being effective and efficient.

Tanvi Shendye, Bombay Veterinary College, Mumbai

What is Homeopathy? How does it work? What are its core beliefs? How are Homeopathic Medicines made? If you have ever had questions related to Homeopathy, its mode of action, etc, we’ve got you covered in this blog. This world Homeopathy Awareness Week, let us look at some amazing facts and features of Homeopathic Medicine!

HOMEOPATHY AS AN ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE FORM

Homeopathy is a natural form of medicine and has been gaining popularity right along with the Ayurveda medicine system and the Allopathic system. Homeopathy is one of the longest established alternative medicine to come out of Europe. In fact, this medicine system treats the overall wellbeing of a person and not just the signs/symptoms observed. Homeopathic Medicines are termed as remedies and the Homeopathic Doctor suggests one best remedy for the overall health and symptom state of a person, taking into account the full range of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual states of the person. Homeopathic Doctor gives the remedy once in a single dose, of the required potency and then observes the responses for the next few weeks this is called ‘The Constitutional Treatment’ in the classical homeopathy system.

The frequency of medicine dosing (dosage intervals) depends upon the history taken and the severity of the case. For instance, an acute case would be handled in a different way as compared to a chronic long-standing illness. The dosing is frequent (within a few minutes or repeating medicine every few hours) in case of acute conditions while in other cases for normal-chronic cases the dosing interval would be more (for eg. Twice a day or thrice a day or once a day)

BELIEFS OF HOMEOPATHY MEDICINE

The basic idea behind Homeopathy is not just to treat the symptoms or signs but to focus on the 360° aspect of a disease process. Homeopathic Doctor focuses on the overall well-being of the patient and not just the observable symptoms of the disease. The doctor will ask for your history (just like an allopathic doctor) but on the flip side will ask you more questions than usually asked. They will also ask questions regarding your mental aspect, your surroundings, your behavior, etc. Yes, these things apply to Veterinary Medicine as well! Thus this form of treatment focuses on the overall treatment of the disease rather than treating signs and symptoms only. Let’s look at some of the core beliefs of this system-

  1. The major one is like-cures-like
Homeopathy believes that a substance that causes symptoms of a disease in healthy people can cure similar symptoms in sick people; this principle is called similia similibuscurentur, or “like cures like”. In fact the name Homeopathy too has a unique meaning. The term “homeopathy” thus comes from the Greek words,  hómoios which means “-like” and páthos which means “suffering” thus, even the name is based on this ‘Like-cures-like’ phenomenon.
  2. The potency of drugsAccording to the principles of homeopathy, each dilution makes the product stronger. The process is called potentization. In homeopathic medicine, this is called the Law of Infinitesimals.
  3. Bring back the body to its natural form – Homeostasis
Homeopathic treatment is designed to facilitate the release of the illness. This system believes in the power of natural forces which works to ensure the body is back to its best form by maintaining homeostasis (a state of perfect well being)

HOW ARE HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES MADE?

Homeopathic preparations are termed remedies and are prepared using a wide range of things right from plants, and minerals, to animal products. For example, strychnosnux vomica, chinchona bark, aloe, marigold etc.

A small amount of the mineral, plant, or animal product is added to a dilution material, such as alcohol. (Now you know the reason behind the typical taste of Homeopathic Medicine!).

Also, sometimes these Homeopathic products may be delivered within small white lactose pills ,(the typical tiny white balls which we know of) or in liquids, or creams (for eg. Calendula cream) that are used externally.

-These remedies are generally labeled by the ratio of dilution and the number of times diluted. For example 30C, 10M.

These were a few facts about Homeopathy as an alternative medicine form. This World Homeopathy Awareness Week, we hope you spread the good word about the benefits, and facts of Homeopathy as an alternative medicine form and take very good care of your as well as your pet’s health. Let’s keep in mind the theme for this year 2021, “Homeopathy- Roadmap for Integrative Medicine” and focus on building a society, where every human being and their pets as well as others outside like flora and fauna, the strays are all fit healthy and happy

With a 360° good health approach, we have the ability and power to create a difference, a good difference, and build up a better world. Let’s pave the way for Homeopathy as the roadmap for integrative medicine!

Protect Your Pets From Worms, It’s Easy With Side-Effect-Free Medication

worms in pets

No pet parent likes to think of their dog having worms, but there’s almost nothing unusual about it – in fact, your puppy or dog has probably had them at some point in their lives.

Most puppies are actually born with worms, which are contracted from their mother’s milk like Toxocara, while other dog worms are obtained from fleas and flies or the environment. If your puppy or dog has worms and the treatment is followed speedily, there’s no need for your dog’s health to be compromised at all.

Dr. Sakshi Sharma, MVSc, J&K

Different kinds of worms your dog may have

There are hundreds of kinds of worms that your dog could have, but some are more common than others. They all can have different kinds of symptoms. The best way for them is to look out for anything particularly unusual – especially in your dog’s feces – in case of worms are involved. The different kinds of worms, in general, can be:

Tapeworms

Roundworms

Hookworms

Whipworms

Lungworms

Heartworms etc.

How can your dog get these worms?

Puppies are infected with roundworms (Toxocaraspp and Toxascarisspp) from their mother’s milk.

This is why it is important to worm expectant and nursing mothers with a safe, licensed veterinary product.

Dogs can also be infected by eating contaminated rodents or soil.

Roundworms in dogs can be identified as long noodles-like shapes in the faeces or, in severe cases, in vomit.

Symptoms of worms in dogs

It’s not always easy to detect dog worms with your eyes, so don’t worry if you get it wrong – if you’re unsure about worms in your dog, or you don’t know what kind they are, consultation with a veterinarian can help solve this problem. Regular vet checkups will give your vet a chance to spot any potential dog health problems and help resolve them before they become serious. In any case, your vet should be consulted before you try to formulate any treatment yourself, just in case there’s a different problem at hand.

So the common symptoms to know if your dog has got worms are:

  • Dog worms in your pet’s faeces, vomit, or around their anus.
  • Weakness and depression.
  • Rubbing their bottom on the floor.
  • Diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Weight loss despite a good appetite.
  • An abnormally swollen stomach.
  • Severe vomiting, loss of appetite, and depression might be a result of a large burden causing a blockage of the intestine (which is usually seen in puppies).
  • Coughing and bleeding problems, among various other signs, may suggest Lungworm.

Prevention and control of worms in dogs

Your puppy should already be worm-free if they’ve come from a reputable breeder or rescue center, as it will have been dewormed before being handed over to you. Keep the records of the deworming treatment, and ask your vet how to continue the schedule. If you keep track of your pet’s deworming treatment and keep checking for symptoms, their chances of suffering through ill health because of worms are greatly reduced.

It’s not just puppies that suffer from the worms, but the adult dogs need worming too, as they might pick infections during their outdoor activities. Ask the vet to supply a dewormer and provide you with more information on the symptoms of worms in dogs. They can also tell you how frequently your dog would benefit from worming, so you can get a proper record.

Sometimes, stool sampling can be recommended for the proper identification of the worms involved. In this case, the stool samples are observed under the microscope to identify the type of eggs.

Dog worms and humans

Sometimes, dog worms can be transmitted to humans or spread dog-to-dog via faeces. Because of this, it is always a good idea to dispose of stools when your dog goes to the toilet outside. This will help to prevent re-infestation and will protect his playmates as well. There are a number of other parasites to look for which are present on your dog’s body, including fleas, mites, and ticks.

Although it’s alluring for them, try not to let your dog eat slugs and snails. Human infection is uncommon, but always use proper hygiene measures, such as making sure children wash their hands after playing with your pet just to be safe.

Generally, worms in dogs are not a serious concern. As long as you detect them and treat them in good time, your dog will be as happy as ever!

Health is Wealth’ we have often read this quote since childhood, where we talk about the importance of good health as this is the ONLY and prime wealth we have in our lives. That’s true to many extents as wealth is of many types – monetary wealth, luxury wealth, etc., but the important one is always the wealth of Health.

Every Year on April 7th, The WHO – World Health Organization observes “WORLD HEALTH DAY,” and over the past 50 years, this event has brought to light important health issues such as mental Health, maternal/ child care, climate change, etc. The date of April 7th marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. World Health Day is a global health awareness day to spread awareness, and knowledge and to focus on topics that are often directly or indirectly ignored- for instance, mental Health.

Tanvi Shendye, Bombay Veterinary College

Health includes but is not limited to physical Health (a state of being free from diseases). In fact, Health is defined as a state of physical, mental, and social well-being in which disease and infirmity are absent. Each year on World Health Day, the WHO announces a theme for the day. The 2021 theme for World Health Day is “Building a fairer, healthier world.”

What is a fairer, healthier world?

A world is considered to be healthy when there are peace and justice prevailing with happiness and perfect Health as its anchor. A world is considered to be fair when no species is considered to be greater or smaller, where each and every being, regardless of their species, race, religion, or ethnicity, are treated with love and kindness. Good Health is a fundamental right of every single being walking the face of the earth. Yes, this includes all wildlife, all stray animals, all pets, all trees, all birds, and all humans!

This World Health Day 2021, let’s talk about the Physical, Mental, and Social well-being of our beloved furry friends, our pets who are our family members and are at the core of our lives. This world health day. Here’s how you can ensure good Health in pets!

PHYSICAL HEALTH

This topic is often touched upon almost daily in our blogs, so please make sure to read them! This world health day, we can ensure our pet’s good physical Health by following the 4 steps to physical wellness
1. General checkups
2. Routine Deworming
3. Vaccination
4. Exercises Let’s discuss them in detail-

1. General Check-ups

General Check-ups refer to routine health checkups of your pets. Once every 8-12 months, it’s a good practice to take your furry friend to the veterinarian. Why? Ensure your furry baby is scanned thoroughly for any ailments!

There are some diseases that are cryptic (for example, cancer) while some diseases are very mild, which often goes unnoticed, as the signs/symptoms your pet might be showing are too bleak to be noticed. Your Vet will often carry out the routine procedures of running a blood panel to ensure there’s no infection of any sort. They will also make sure that your pet’s gums, teeth, ears, nails, and skin are in perfect shape. That’s the veterinarian’s part. Here’s what you, as a pet parent, can do on a daily basis –

  1. Check your dog/cat’s fur coat for any ticks/fleas

Ticks and fleas are notorious for spreading diseases such as tapeworm infection, and tick fever (Ehrlichiaspp, Babesia spp). A routine daily checkup of these ectoparasites is a great way to start focusing on the Physical Health of your pets.

The use of shampoos that have good action against ticks and fleas can be used for this purpose, along with the use of other tools such as spot-on, anti-flea collars, etc.

Pro Tip– brushing your pet’s fur with a comb almost daily has immense beneficial effects.

  1. It gives a sense of calm, and relief to your baby (as combing/brushing is scratching their backs)
  2. It helps you to locate ticks and fleas quickly!
  3. No fur knots formed!

2. Routine Deworming

It is a good practice to follow the deworming schedule as prescribed by your Vet. Generally, adults are dewormed once every 3 to 4 months as it prevents scope for any endoparasitic infections such as tapeworms, roundworms, etc. Tapeworms are particularly very intimidating creatures as they tend to take up all the nutrients from your pet’s body to thrive and cause your pet to lose weight, and become weaker. And it’s a fact if you’re physically weak/not strong enough, you tend to be mentally weak too. If you’re physically being bothered, it’s pretty obvious you’re mentally going to get bothered too! Hence, deworm your pets!

3. Vaccination

Routine vaccination schedules and record-keeping are extremely important aspects of the general fitness of your furry friend.

Adults require annual vaccination against rabies and other viral diseases such as Parvovirus, Distemper virus, and Leptospira bacteria. We are blessed with good vaccines and must follow this yearly vaccination schedule to prevent many of the notorious diseases such as gastrointestinal infections, etc. Thanks to Covid-19, we all know the importance of immunity and how vaccines play an important role in building it. Vaccinations in pets play the same role! Vaccines build up immunity for your pets so that they are not harmed when exposed to dangerous viruses and bacteria.

4. Exercise

Taking your pet for a refreshing walk or jogging daily with your furry paw ensures your pet has good physical activity. Exercising daily has immense health benefits, which act as a base to build upon good Health, a happy mind, and a sound body. Exercise acts as a stimulant and releases happy hormones. Exercise helps to increase flexibility and endurance. Also, it boosts strength, and provides mental satisfaction and happiness. Exercises keep many health problems caused by obesity at bay! When your dog lacks exercise, it ends up becoming bored or frustrated. And this can manifest itself as destructive behavior or aggression.

Here’s what you can do –

  1. Daily walks 2-4 times per day to refresh them and give them relief from holding their bladder.
  2. Playing with balls/toys
  3. Running in the backyard
  4. Going on hikes or short jog
  5. Toys and play area for puppies and kittens

MENTAL & SOCIAL HEALTH

Let’s talk about the lesser-known facets which prove to be essential for maintaining the good Health of our furry friends – Mental and Social well-being.

Pets, like humans, can undergo periods of stress, anxiety, and depression, loneliness due to certain events occurring around them. Just like humans, pets too get affected by it.

Here’s what you can do to ensure good mental and social Health for your pets-

1. Give them time and attention

Yes, the best part of your pets’ day is when they spend time with you. You are the best thing in their lives. Never forget this fact! They love when you just give them a little time and attention despite your hectic schedule. So go on, talk to them, love them, take them on walks and just focus on increasing the bond between you two.

This ensures 2 things

  1. Happiness for your pets
  2. Happiness for you

And just by being there and spending some time with them, it’s a scientific fact that stress levels rapidly decrease (in humans and animals both), and happy hormones start increasing.

2. Speak Positive Words.

Whenever your pet is acting like a good boy/good girl, make sure they know it too! Saying positive words and good thoughts, words of encouragement, does, in fact, help your pets feel super proud and happy. It relaxes the stress and promotes happiness!! We all need a ray of sunshine in our lives. For pets, you are the ray of sunshine! So go on, talk to them! Tell your pets how your day was; ask them how their day was. Maybe you both won’t understand each other due to the language barrier, but trust me, we do understand emotions regardless of language and species. Try it today!

3. Walks

Yes, daily walks help in promoting the good physical Health of your pets but also, it does help in the mental sector too. Walks help to refresh their minds and enjoy the beauty of nature. There are endless benefits of walking.

  1. Rejuvenation
  2. Happiness Quotient
  3. Analysis of situation
  4. Enjoying nature
  5. Staying fit
  6. Mental and physical stimulation
  7. Obesity can be kept under check

You can decide where to walk your pets. Dog parks seem to be a great place too. It will help your little furry friend make some other friends while you too can make friends with other pet parents. So go on make some friends at the park and have a happy little dog party!

4. Socializing

When your furry babies are babies (puppies), make sure you’re taking them between humans and fellow dogs to initiate friendship. Even if your pets are adults, try to make them aware of their surroundings and encourage them to initiate friendships with fellow humans and fellow dogs. Friendship and Bonding are the core nature of all creatures. We always notice every single animal on this planet has some or the other kind of association with some other animal. There are a mutual bonding and love which binds us all. Hence, make sure you’re allowing your pet to expand its horizons and enjoy what life has to offer by loving and bonding with others. This helps with conditions such as social anxiety, loneliness, depression, lethargy, and isolation.

This World Health Day ’21, let’s keep in mind the theme “Building a fairer, healthier world” by focusing on the health of our pets along with us humans! Let’s start this trend to prioritize our well-being along with the well-being of all of them living amongst us, which includes our pets, our stray community animals, our wild animals, our birds, and our trees! Only when we respect nature and its beings can we thrive physically and mentally. Only when we believe and vouch for working to build a fairer, healthier world for all can we actually stay connected, grounded, and healthy in the true sense.

It’s a circle of life; let’s pledge to be a part of the change to preserve, save and grow our community as citizens of earth. Let’s pledge to BUILD A FAIRER AND HEALTHIER WORLD! We, the Goel Vet Pharma team, wish you and your furry friend a Very Happy World Health Day’21. Here’s to a new chapter of building a happy, fairer, and healthier world!
