World Homeopathy Awareness Week 2021 – Homeopathy The Roadmap For Integrative Medicine

Homeopathy is one of the many branches of medicine which is also an alternative form of medicine. This medicine system was established in 1700 and was developed in the late 1700s in Germany by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann. The World Homeopathy Awareness Organization created World Homeopathy Awareness Week from April 10^th to April 16^th. World Homeopathy Day kicks off the week of April 10^th, which is Dr. Hahnemann’s birthday. This year on the occasion of World Homeopathy Day, the AYUSH ministry has decided to celebrate the day with the theme- “Homeopathy- Roadmap for Integrative Medicine”.

Integrative medicine approach means that two or more alternative medicine forms along with conventional treatment (allopathy) are used to cure or give relief from medical ailments. As we know due to covid-19 we have started adopting the Ayurvedic approach (like drinking Turmeric milk etc) and the Homeopathic approach (Arsenic Album etc immunity boosters) along with traditional allopathic antibiotics and similar drugs. The future is integrative medicine as this serves to be quick, easy, simple, and do-able along with being effective and efficient.

HOMEOPATHY AS AN ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE FORM

Homeopathy is a natural form of medicine and has been gaining popularity right along with the Ayurveda medicine system and the Allopathic system. Homeopathy is one of the longest established alternative medicine to come out of Europe. In fact, this medicine system treats the overall wellbeing of a person and not just the signs/symptoms observed. Homeopathic Medicines are termed as remedies and the Homeopathic Doctor suggests one best remedy for the overall health and symptom state of a person, taking into account the full range of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual states of the person. Homeopathic Doctor gives the remedy once in a single dose, of the required potency and then observes the responses for the next few weeks this is called ‘The Constitutional Treatment’ in the classical homeopathy system.

The frequency of medicine dosing (dosage intervals) depends upon the history taken and the severity of the case. For instance, an acute case would be handled in a different way as compared to a chronic long-standing illness. The dosing is frequent (within a few minutes or repeating medicine every few hours) in case of acute conditions while in other cases for normal-chronic cases the dosing interval would be more (for eg. Twice a day or thrice a day or once a day)

BELIEFS OF HOMEOPATHY MEDICINE

The basic idea behind Homeopathy is not just to treat the symptoms or signs but to focus on the 360° aspect of a disease process. Homeopathic Doctor focuses on the overall well-being of the patient and not just the observable symptoms of the disease. The doctor will ask for your history (just like an allopathic doctor) but on the flip side will ask you more questions than usually asked. They will also ask questions regarding your mental aspect, your surroundings, your behavior, etc. Yes, these things apply to Veterinary Medicine as well! Thus this form of treatment focuses on the overall treatment of the disease rather than treating signs and symptoms only. Let’s look at some of the core beliefs of this system-

Homeopathy believes that a substance that causes symptoms of a disease in healthy people can cure similar symptoms in sick people; this principle is called similia similibuscurentur, or “like cures like”. In fact the name Homeopathy too has a unique meaning. The term “homeopathy” thus comes from the Greek words, hómoios which means “-like” and páthos which means “suffering” thus, even the name is based on this ‘Like-cures-like’ phenomenon.
The potency of drugsAccording to the principles of homeopathy, each dilution makes the product stronger. The process is called potentization. In homeopathic medicine, this is called the Law of Infinitesimals.

Homeopathic treatment is designed to facilitate the release of the illness. This system believes in the power of natural forces which works to ensure the body is back to its best form by maintaining homeostasis (a state of perfect well being)

HOW ARE HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES MADE?

Homeopathic preparations are termed remedies and are prepared using a wide range of things right from plants, and minerals, to animal products. For example, strychnosnux vomica, chinchona bark, aloe, marigold etc.

– A small amount of the mineral, plant, or animal product is added to a dilution material, such as alcohol. (Now you know the reason behind the typical taste of Homeopathic Medicine!).

– Also, sometimes these Homeopathic products may be delivered within small white lactose pills ,(the typical tiny white balls which we know of) or in liquids, or creams (for eg. Calendula cream) that are used externally.

-These remedies are generally labeled by the ratio of dilution and the number of times diluted. For example 30C, 10M.
