Dogs, the inquisitive, enthusiastic, ball of energy who wants nothing, expects nothing but loves with an open heart and a wagging tail! Dogs are natural explorers, who love to explore the unexplored areas, as do they love to play, jump, hop and run! Dogs come off as brave and somewhat fearless. They are strong, powerful and to say the least little balls of energy and cuteness. These little furballs cherish each and every moment of their lives more often setting an example in front of the pet owners on how to live and enjoy each moment to the fullest! With good energy comes good power. But with good energy there always stays a chance of some minor injuries which can manifest in the form of sprain, muscular pain, sometimes leading to bone-joint related trauma too. It is always better to understand and to beware about the ills of injury, about accidents which may happen and what to do next in case it does. Accidents are called accidents for the very reason that they occur so suddenly which is why it is always a positive thing to note down and be aware of the events which if not manifested in real is for the best, but if it does, we should be well prepared in advance. Today let us try to understand more about injuries pertaining to muscle-joint-bones with respect to trauma. Let us start at the basics, what is trauma?
Trauma: The Twist Of Life.
Trauma refers to any form of injury which could be physical in nature [for instance sprain, wounds, lacerations] or mental/emotional in nature [pain, hurt following any sad event]. In today’s blog, let us try to uncover bit by bit types of physical trauma, how It manifests, what are the signs and symptoms of the same. Here are some of the most commonly encountered types of traumas.
1. Sprain :
Sprain refers to stretching, twisting or tearing of ligaments, muscles etc. Ligaments are nothing but connective tissue structures that help connect two bones. These are rather tough bands of fibrous tissues that connects two bones together in joints. Any sudden twisting action at joint area [while running or jumping up/down the bed/sofa], there is a chance that the ligament could end up exerting itself, stretching beyond its normal position thereby eliciting a pain response due to sprain. Sudden landing, falling and over using too can cause sprain. There is one particular ligament which as compared to others is rather more prone to getting hurt/ damaged, i.e., injury to the cruciate ligament. It is one of the most common limb injuries seen in dogs. This ligament is located in the knee area. It may get ruptured or injured which will elicit knee pain and instability
You may notice-
- Sudden change in walking behaviour
- Limping on one particular leg
- No swelling noticed
- Reluctance to place the affected limb on the ground.
- Pain in the affected area. [Knee area more often than not is overrepresented when it comes down to injuries and sprains]
On the other side, sprain can be traced back to muscles too. This type of sprain is called Muscle Pull or Muscle Sprain. It can be caused due to direct or indirect trauma. Direct trauma to the muscle is as common as is the indirect trauma due to trauma of the nearby regions.
Major Reasons for Muscle Pull:
- Overstretching of Muscle
- Excessive activities such as athletic activities, running, jumping [on high sofas/beds]
- Pushing physical limits while training
- Bone related issues such as Fracture or External Deep Lacerations
You may notice:
- Limping and Lameness
- Trouble in walking
- Painful on touch
- Unwillingness to walk/run/do physical exercises
- Swelling of the affected area
- Bruising may or may not be noticed.
2. Cuts.
It is one of the most commonly encountered trauma or injury in dogs and cats. It is not uncommon to see pets with cut wounds after playing in areas with thorny bushes or due to some fencing wires. Cuts can also be due to sharp cutting objects such as glass pieces or bottles discarded near the community bin. This type of injury is also termed as laceration where the tissue continuity is lost and there may/may not be bleeding from the affected site.
You may notice-
- Bleeding if the cut is deep enough
- Loss of fur from the area and skin too
- Loss of tissue integrity
- It may or may not be painful when touched [depending upon the degree of cut and the individuality of the pet]
3. Bite Wounds :
Number 3 on our list of traumas are bite wounds. Dogs may end up getting in trouble due to fighting or quarrelling with fellow members of their species. Cats on the other hand too can have a bit of an anger issue especially non-neutered tom cats who let’s just say would not like another stray kitten or dog wandering in their areas. Although it is a natural phenomenon to protect ones’ territories it may be dangerous and unwanted. Dog bites required immediate visit to the vet as we may not know the immunisation status of the stray [dog or cat] against the deadly rabies virus.
You may notice-
- Pain in the affected area
- Deep penetrating wound or hole is noticed
- There may be bleeding
- In case it is a stray dog whom you look after, there may be a good chance of maggots to infest the hole of the bite wound if not treated aptly and properly.
- Flies may end up getting attracted to the wound site in strays thereby initiating maggot wound which would again worsen the situation.
4. Scratches :
Some cats on sudden encounter may react by scratching your pet. They may end up scratching your pets’body (apart from face) which is not that scary as is a scratch on the face. Cat nails are like hooks which may cause some great deal of damage sometimes as severe as lacerations near the eye. It is important to note that not all dogs or cats are dangerous and no animal will attack unless provoked. Puppies and kittens being innocent may approach bigger cats and may get scratched. It is also possible that bigger dogs might attack younger kittens and puppies. Yet, it is only seen if new kittens or puppies wander off to an area which is not theirs or approach any other animals out of the blue.
You may notice-
- Straight line or crossed line
- Slight reddening of the area of scratch
- Bleeding may not be as evident
- It would be painful to touch
5. Ligament Ruptures :
Ligaments are tough fibrous bands located at the joint surface which provides stability and support to the joint. In a sense, ligament connects two bones and belongs to the family of connective tissues. One such important ligament in dog is the cruciate ligament. This ligament provides stability to the knee joint. Rupture of this ligament is possible and is usually a very painful process. If your pet dog is holding its leg up or has their toetouching the ground, you might want to get it checked out immediately.
6. Lameness/Back Trouble :
Lameness refers to an unwillingness to walk or rise due to some ongoing bone-muscle-disorder. Most often, small dogs with long backs, for instance, dachshunds, and corgis are prone to Intervertebral Disc Disease due to their skeletal anatomy. In particular, if they tend to jump down from a bed/sofa/chair too often and too quickly may cause them to acquire a slipped disc or some spine related affection.
You may notice-
- Pain in the back region along the spine
- Paraplegia or paralysis could also be a feature
- Unwilling to walk or run
- Lameness is a typical feature
7. Broken Nail :
A broken nail is a common type of trauma associated with pets having long nails. Due to uneven nails, there is improper grip as well as a chance for nails to get broken. Broken nails tend to bleed a lot if the vein area is affected and may also cause a tremendous amount of pain. Also, often if nails are cut beyond the bloodline region, there may be spontaneous bleeding from the nails. On walks, pets may accidentally cut their paws with glass which may again lead to more pain and bleeding episodes. The bleeding can be controlled by packing it with cotton or some styptic powders however, pain needs to be either controlled with pain meds as prescribed by your vet. For intense bleeding, an emergency visit to the vet is warranted.
The Trauma Drama: Prevention And Cure
Trauma cases can range from minor affections such as scratch or wounding due to sharp objects to as major as accidents, fall from heights, and violent blows. Minor trauma can be managed at home with local antiseptics, whereas for major wounds, and accidents, the first step essentially becomes to stabilise the patient via fluid therapy, oxygen therapy, and other emergency diagnostics and treatment followed by managemental care at home to ensure proper recovery.
For sprains, minor trauma such as wounds, associated joint disease coupled with pain, or muscle trauma due to violent running, jumping Trumate Drops for Pets is an ideal homeopathic medicine. TRUMATE DROPS for pets are helpful for treating conditions of Accidental injury, Sprain, and Trauma with exceptional improvement in immobilizing conditions. Sprain and physical trauma-like symptoms in any part of the body can be adeptly managed. It also helps to reduce pain associated with injuries, sprains, and trauma in the body and heals external injury or internal injury faster when coupled with other needful medicines depending upon the type of trauma.
Trauma is quite a challenge in itself, as it may come in different forms and different types, and it is quite a daunting task to manage the pain it brings along. Trauma can be quite minor, like cuts or wounds, which may not require extensive medical therapy; however, some trauma types, such as accidents, require immediate medical support and therapy. Do not delay trauma care management as major trauma such as violent falls or accidents may cause fatality if delayed beyond a certain time. Trauma is not to be feared, it is to be faced with faith. Trumate Drops for pets are a homeopathic medicine for pain associated with trauma, sprains, lameness, and immobility conditions.
