Osteoarthritis is a common problem in dogs, especially in age-old and heavy breeds. Early detection of the problem and initiating the appropriate management at the right time can help the dog to lead an active and quality life. As there is no cure for this progressive condition through conventional treatment, alternative systems like homeopathic medicine are providing the best results.

What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis, also referred to as Degenerative Joint Disease, is a progressive inflammation of the joints caused by the deterioration of cartilage. While any joint in the body can develop osteoarthritis, this condition affects mostly the limbs and the lower spine. In a healthy joint, cartilage acts as a cushion to allow the joints to move smoothly through their full range of motion. In cases of osteoarthritis, this cartilage cushion begins to break down because of factors such as age, injury, stress, or disease. The loss of this protective cushion results in pain, inflammation, decreased range of motion, and the development of bone spurs.
Risk Factors for Osteoarthritis in Dogs
Any breed of dog can develop osteoarthritis, particularly as they progress with age. But there are some factors that can predispose a dog to this condition, such as fractures or tears in the ligaments due to repetitive stress from athletic activities in large or giant breeds like German Shepherds, Labrador, Retrievers, and Golden Retrievers. Other predisposing factors like obesity, age, particularly middle-aged to age-old dogs, infections that affect the joints as such in Lyme’s disease, improper nutrition, poor conformation, genetic factors, etc., could also be a reason.
Signs of Osteoarthritis in Dogs
Early detection of osteoarthritis is the toughest task, and often the symptoms do not become apparent until the affected joint is badly damaged. In some dogs, the predisposition to pain may take time because of their heaviness. Thus, it is important to keep monitoring middle-aged to age-old dogs and those predisposed to osteoarthritis for early signs of Degenerative Joint Disease.
These signs include
Stiffness, lameness or difficulty in getting up, lethargy, reluctance to run even for a short distance, jump, or play, weight gain, irritability, changes in behavior, and pain in the joints when palpated are the most common symptoms. Difficulty in posturing to urinate or defecate or having accidents in the house, and loss of muscle mass over the limbs and spine are other additional symptoms.
Additional Treatment
Veterinarians may recommend treatment modalities like physiotherapy, acupuncture, cold laser, and changes in diet. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended to remove the damaged tissue from the joint or even to replace the entire joint.
