Skin & Coat – Shiny And Bright Fur Is All We Want

Fur here fur there, Fur flying everywhere, My pet is itchy and shedding too, Is it the season or infection blues?

Our pets are often adored for their lustrous coat and healthy skin. In fact, our pets’ health is directly reflected in their skin/fur coats. Yes, it is true. We all love a pet who is healthy, and happy with a shiny coat and minimal fur-shedding. What happens is sometimes we may observe our pets shedding their fur. Our blankets and clothes are filled with fur right after a tight hug from our furry friend. Is it natural? Do pets really shed a large amount of fur? In today’s blog, let us go behind the scenes and understand the basic physiology and process of skin-fur health management.

The Fur Factor:

We, humans, have hair on our bodies and this hair has quite a number of purposes to serve. It is one of the defining characteristics of mammals. Hair is a protein filament that grows from follicles found in the dermis [skin]. The major function of hair is to protect the skin [body] from the outside environment as well as serve as an insulating agent. At the same time, we humans have evolved in such a way that we wear clothing to protect and keep ourselves warm. Our pets, on the other hand, have fur instead of hair to serve the same function.

Fur is a kind of thick growth of hair that covers the skin. A different breed of dog has different fur. In fact, the fur type, and form of fur depends upon the environment which that breed of dog faces. For example- Indie breed dogs [Mudhdol Hound, Rajapalliyam, etc.] have a rather thin fur coat as India is a tropical country and is predominantly hot and humid. On the flip side, Alaskan Malamutes or Huskies, which are native to northern regions of the globe, tend to have a thick coat of fur as the atmosphere in Alaska [northern regions] is supremely cold, and thus, these dogs require a good amount of insulation and protection against adverse climatic conditions.

Here Are Few Dog Breeds And Their Fur Type:

As mentioned above, the environment plays an important role in molding the type of fur your furry friend might have. And thus, according to breeds, fur pattern changes. Here are some of the most common breeds found in India and their fur/coat type.

1. Short Fur/Coated Dogs:

These dogs have very short fur coats.

  1. Some of the Indie Breeds such as-.

-Mudhol Hound, Rajapalliyam [Indian Sighthound], Chippiparai, Kanni, Indian Pariah Dogs, Rampur Grey Hound.

  1. Foreign Breed dogs such as-

– Chihuahua, Boston terrier, Dalmation, French bulldog, Greyhound, Mastiff, Boxers, Pugs, Great Dane, Dachshund, Beagles.

2. Medium-Coated Dogs:

These dogs have comparatively more fur coats.

Breeds such as Corgi, Shepherd dogs, Border collies, Indian Spitz dogs, Cocker Spaniels, Pomeranians, etc.

3. Long-Fur Dogs:

They have long fur coats and/or thicker fur coats.

  1. An Indie breed such as-

– Bakharwal Dog [native to Jammu Kashmir Ladakh Union Territories], Gaddi Kutta [Gaddi Watchdog] native to northern India, Himalayan Sheepdog, Tibetian Mastiff, Kumaon Mastiff

As these dogs reside in Himalayan areas in the northern part of India, they tend to have thick coats and long fur to protect them against the chilly atmosphere of Himlayan Areas.

  1. Foreign breed dogs such as –

– German Shepherd, Siberian husky, Alaskan Malamutes, English Setters, Lhasa Apso

Fur Factor #2: Issues & Problems

While fur is an excellent insulator and protects the body from all odds, it is also an indicator of your dogs’ health status. While it does add to the beauty of a dog, it is a good reflective mirror that can give you an idea of an underlying issue. All dogs are beautiful and loving creatures, but due to certain skin conditions and disease processes, your pet might experience fur loss, rough coat, dull color, loss of luster, etc. At the same time, there are many biological conditions that are at play apart from infectious reasons. Right from nutritional imbalances to hormonal harmony to seasonal shedding changes, let us have a quick look at what exact mechanism works behind keeping our dogs’ fur shiny, healthy and happy.

Fur: A Mirror Reflection Of Ailments

1. INFECTIOUS CAUSES

Bacterial Skin infections are the #1 forerunners that hamper the harmony of skin & fur. Dermatitis is one such condition that affects the skin. Dermatitis essentially means inflammation of the dermis [skin], and this, in turn, could be caused by a variety of causes. Apart from dermatitis, there are other types of bacterial infectious agents that cause pyoderma, folliculitis, etc. Certain ectoparasites too cause loss of fur and dry-scaly skin, for example, Demodex mites and Sarcoptes mites, which cause mange. You may observe that there is a definitive pattern of fur loss. These mites-related infections start with the loss of fur from around the eye region, and then, later on, there is diffuse loss of fur along with secondary bacterial infection. Also, during parasitic load, [intestinal worms] there may be rough hair coat, and dull color of fur which could be observed.

Apart from bacterias and mites, another type of infectious agent is the Fungi. These fungi cause redness, loss of chunks of fur from a circumscribed area. It is a well-known fact that these bacterial and fungal infectious agents are opportunistic in nature. That is, bacteria and fungi attack the skin only when they get an opportunity to do so, and this opportunity is offered to them by low immunity. Your dog might have low immunity, which could predispose them to various infection-causing agents such as viruses, fungi, bacteria, etc.

WHAT HAPPENS HERE?

  1. You may observe your dog is itchy and scratching its body against some rough surface
  2. You may observe fleas and ticks [Fleas are a well-known cause of allergic dermatitis]
  3. Loss of fur is evident
  4. You may observe more shedding of fur than usual
  5. The hair coat is rough to touch
  6. The color of the fur is dull and has lost its luster
  7. You may observe the pattern of fur loss [ for example, only on the tail region or eye region]

2. NON-INFECTIOUS CAUSES

Apart from infectious causes of fur loss, and rough coat, there are some non-infectious causes too. While major chunks of skin diseases are primary in nature i.e., they are caused due to primary opportunistic bacteria and fungi. There might be other reasons for shedding or fur. It is important to note that, while fur loss may be evident, in non-infectious causes, there is less inflammation and more symmetrical loss of fur.

1. HORMONE HARMONY

Rough hair coat, old age, patchy loss of fur [symmetrical manner], and rat-tail appearance of the tail are clear indicators of thyroid hormone-related issues. Your veterinarian might suggest thyroid testing given the age, skin issues, and other concurrent signs observed. While everyone inevitably has to grow old, skin diseases might come into the picture reflective of underlying systemic diseases. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential for arriving at a good destination of health.

SEASONAL SHEDDING

While most dogs shed their fur at least once or twice a year, there is nothing to worry about in case you observe more fur loss than before during shedding season. Occasional shedding occurs when fur becomes damaged and thus: ‘to allow new fur to grow, the old one has to go!’ Shedding does occur when new fur has to grow. Shedding also depends upon the season, health status, and age stage of life; shedding most frequently occurs during or before the summer season since the atmosphere is extremely hot, whereas even during June-July, there might be increased shedding in response to hot + humid atmosphere. This is a totally natural and normal phenomenon observed in dogs and cats, and thereby you need not worry about the same. However, if you observe any other concurrent health conditions and skin infections, you might need to give your vet a visit to ensure safety as ‘Prevention is always better than cure. Skin infections and issues should not be taken lightly as they might be secondary to some other health issue.

1. ALLERGIC TWIST

Many types of human foods are forbidden in the dog-cat kingdom. Some people might unknowingly offer this foodstuff to them, which again does more bad than good. Sweet biscuits or cookies are strictly forbidden and must not be given as they have high sugar content. On the other hand, Indian flat-bread, which is made from wheat flour or wheat rotis, should not be given to dogs as it may cause gluten allergy in pets and again aggravate the fur-loss conditions. Your pet might be allergic to many types of feedstuffs, and thus, consult your nearest vet and ask them beforehand which type of feedstuff is OK and which ones are strictly contraindicated.

Shiny And Bright Fur Is All We Want:

While you as pet parents want the best for your pets, a good hair coat, and shiny and bright fur is all that we want! In case of doubts regarding the cause of fur loss, dry coat, and itchy and scaly skin, you must visit your nearest veterinarian to ensure that the shedding which your dog/cat faces is 100% natural and seasonal and not due to some infectious agent. In case of infectious skin & coat-related diseases, your veterinarian might suggest some antibiotics for the bacteria, some anti-fungal drugs which act against the fungi, and some supplements for the skin, which might include omega-3-fatty acids, zinc, and other such essential elements required for optimal skin. Your veterinarian might also suggest certain dietary modifications, additions, and deletions. They may ask you to add good protein, fat-containing food like eggs, few health supplements that can be added to the normal diet. They may even ask you to delete or remove gluten-containing wheat Rotis and use alternative options like gluten-free bread or rice.

A U-Turn For Uterine Problems: Keeping Uterine Problems At Bay.

Our lives are closely intertwined with those of other creatures around us. We are all in a circle of life where one creature inevitably depends upon another. This is termed symbiosis- to live in union. One such beautiful example of co-dependency is our relation with the livestock – the cows and buffaloes. We get milk, and we process products from milk such as cheese, paneer, ghee, etc. all of this is possible because of our close connection and co-relation with cows and buffaloes. They have played a crucial role in our lives since time immemorial. On the flip side, we provide them with food, shelter, care, and medicine as required. This is a beautiful example of a symbiotic relationship. In today’s blog, let’s have a look at various uterine problems that cows or buffaloes may face and ways through which we can help them.

THE HARMONY OF HORMONES

Hormones are chemicals that all living beings have, and they play an essential role in regulating various processes in our bodies. Hormones are integral in so many of your body systems, and they regulate a lot of what your body does. Medically, hormones are defined as chemical substances that act like messenger molecules in the body. After being made in one part of the body, they travel to other parts of the body, where they help control how cells and organs do their work.

Here are a few examples of hormonal roles in our body:

  1. Hormones regulate the growth of the body via growth hormones.
  2. They aid in sexual functions, right from conception to parturition [birth giving] also, they aid in lactation [milking young new-born babies]
  3. Hormones play an important role in regulating metabolism via thyroid hormones, etc.
  4. They also aid in various body systems such as the digestive system, the immune system, the urinary system, the cardiovascular system, and the respiratory and skeletal systems.

In fact, all our organs, tissues, and cells are inevitably dependent upon hormonal harmony. Hormones thus help our bodies to function normally, and properly in perfect union with other hormones. Of course, as mentioned above, these hormones or chemical messengers play an extremely crucial role in uterine problems and their solutions.

Let’s have a look at some of the common uterine problems-

Uterine Problems: Unexpected Challenge

The uterus is an organ that is present in the female reproductive tract. It is the female reproductive organ that receives the fertilized egg and supports its development during pregnancy. The main function of the uterus is to protect, grow and nourish the developing foetus prior to birth. There are many challenges a farmer could face while rearing livestock for milk and milk products. Major ones include retention of placenta post-birth, habitual abortion, delivery complications, retention of placenta, metritis, pyometra, etc.

1. Retention Of Placenta

The natural birthing process involves the delivery of the foetus and expulsion of the placenta and other connections, foetal membranes from the uterus. The placenta is a temporary organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy. This structure provides oxygen and nutrients to the growing foetus and removes waste products from the foetal blood. The placenta attaches to the wall of the uterus and is generally expelled out of the body post-birth.

Normally the placental expulsion takes place within 3-8 hours after delivery of the calf.

Retention of the placenta implies that the placenta, which normally should have been expelled out naturally after the birthing process, hasn’t been expelled out. The reason could be the inability of the uterus to contract efficiently, or it could be a sequel to uterine inertia [due to labor stages which lasted for a longer time-span causing the uterus to get tired] or it could be due to premature birth and abortion. Other causes include advancing age of the cow, various nutritional disturbances and inflammation of the placenta, etc

2. Abortions

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by removal or expulsion of an embryo or foetus. It could be because of several reasons like- various bacterial infections such as brucellosis, listeriosis, leptospirosis or viral infections such as bovine viral diarrhea virus, bluetongue virus, toxins, dietary deficiency of Vitamin A, vitamin E, selenium, and iron. Also, severe stress or environmental stress could eventually lead to abortion. High maternal temperature due to fever may be one of the important factors which induce heat stress.

3. Uterine Infections: Pyometra, Metritis, Etc.

Uterine infections such as pyometra or metritis are very important to be noted as they may further complicate the life of the cow. Pyometra is a chronic inflammatory condition of the uterus wherein the uterus is filled with pus. Pyometra is a secondary infection that occurs as a result of hormonal changes in the female’s reproductive tract. There are two types of pyometra:

A] OPEN PYOMETRA: pus will drain from the uterus through the vagina to the outside. Pus or an abnormal discharge is often seen on the skin or hair under the tail or on bedding

B] CLOSED PYOMETRA: If the cervix is closed, pus that forms is not able to drain to the outside. The bacteria release toxins that are absorbed into the bloodstream.

The factors which pre-disposes the female to pyometra are but are not limited to:

  1. ABORTION
  2. PREMATURE BIRTH
  3. TWIN BIRTHS
  4. RETAINED PLACENTA
  5. SEPTIC METRITIS
  6. POST-PARTUM METRITIS
  7. UNHYGIENIC CONDITIONS
  8. INFECTIOUS AGENTS

This increases the chances of invasion of pathogenic bacteria inside the uterus, and their chances of multiplication, too, increase.

Similarly, metritis is the inflammation of the uterus, which again could be related to bacterial-viral etiologies, abortion, or retained placenta. Yes, all of these conditions could be closely linked to each other.

Diagnosis: An Essential Key To Treatment

It is very important to understand why milk production has gone down or why your cattle are unthrifty. The reasons for conception failure, lower milk yield, and frequent abortions could be any, and hence these conditions must be diagnosed at the earliest. The diagnosis, however, depends upon multiple factors. The following three steps are essential to diagnose efficiently:

  1. Clinically relevant History
  2. Laboratory results and testing [USG etc.]
  3. Per-rectal exam

1. History Taking

Your veterinarian may ask clinically relevant questions and try to filter out relevant History. Thus, let’s look into the signs/symptoms which may be observed:

SYMPTOMS

  • Permanent or intermittent purulent discharge is observed by the farmer/owner
  • Cyclic estrous activity may/may not be present [irregular interval]
  • Anorexia
  • Decrease in milk production
  • Dullness/listlessness seen

HISTORY: your vet may ask you-

  • About the age of the animal
  • The date of insemination must be noted
  • Cyclicity date/frequency to be noted

Per-Rectal Exam

On per-rectal examination, your vet might be able to diagnose the Cyclicity, pregnancy stage, etc., cervix, corpus luteum persistence, uterine wall thickness, etc., which may be palpated and noted. In fact, even early-midterm pregnancy can be diagnosed. This helps us to rule out or rule out the possibility of a wide range of uterine problems.

Uterine: Endometritis Treatment in Cattle

Treatment: An Easy Solution

The treatment approaches must be aimed at treating the root cause rather than treating symptoms. Thus, an established diagnosis is important. Your vet may suggest some remedies such as-

1. Dietary Fix

Diet plays an important role in modulating immunity and health. Thus, a few small changes in diets can help. Better-fed cows have higher fertility and an improved conception rate. A good amount of carbohydrates, fats, essential fatty acids, and essential minerals like iron, etc. play a pivotal role in reproductive health. In fact, even vitamins are important in this aspect.

2. Hormonal Therapy

Hormone injections of implants or ear tags could be used to keep in check the balance and Cyclicity of the patient. It’s important to note that hormonal therapy must be initiated or stopped, or regulated under the guidance of a veterinary doctor as these hormones affect the reproductive health as well as various body systems and thus affecting milking, milk yield, and overall health of the cow/buffalo.

3. Non-Hormonal Therapy: Homeopathic Approach

One such novel approach through non-hormonal therapy is homeopathic medicine- Uterogen. The success of pregnancy facilitated by easy parturition depends on the hormonal balance and their regular release. During pregnancy, hormones work on the principle of the check and release phenomenon. It is important that this phenomenon or process is maintained so that all the necessary hormones are activated at the right time. So the entire period between conception and delivery is physiologically balanced by the hormones. The possibility of any type of complication or inconvenience during parturition (delivery) should be minimum, and the tonicity of the uterus should be maintained. Uterogen is a non-hormonal formulation that regulates the hormones concerned with pregnancy. Uterogen regulates and balances the Progesterone levels to make the pregnancy safe. Nearing the delivery, it excites the complete process of parturition by reducing the Progesterone levels and increasing the Oxytocin levels with the help of the Pituitary gland, which stimulates and produces the Oxytocin hormone. Oxytocin, with the help of the Gonadotropic hormone, completes the process of parturition and later stimulates the prolactin hormone so that there is a normal milk yield. Uterogen mediates this complicated process as a non-hormonal indicator and catalyst. In this way, all the hormones are released one after another as per the cycle automatically.

“A MULTI-PURPOSE UTERINE REMEDY” UTEROGEN regulates the process of pregnancy till delivery. Therefore the risk of abortion is minimized. Other conditions for which this remedy can be used are:

  • Uterogen helps with safe delivery.
  • Uterogen maintains the hormonal tonicity of the uterus resulting in the release of hormones sequentially as required.
  • Uterogen is helpful in expelling the placenta, decreasing the possibility of metritis or pyometra, curing the complications of delivery and avoiding infections.

Thus, there might be some instances where your cow might face uterine problems, which could lead to dropping in milk yield, abortions, health issues, and infections, but these are easily curable and preventable by adopting simple approaches, changing diet, antibiotics for infectious causes [metritis, pyometra, etc.] or by hormonal therapy or via novel homeopathic remedies. Let us show a U-TURN to all uterine problems by being vigilant and adopting good rearing practices.

Vitality: That’s The Spirit!

Vigour, Liveliness, Enthusiasm! Today is all about vitality and strength. Vitality is defined as the state of being strong and active. We often look at our pets and think, “Wait, where did my pet get so much energy from- to play all day and night?” True, we all love a happy, positive-spirited pet. As a matter of fact, we love a happy, energetic, and enthusiastic personality regardless of species. We especially are very fond of puppies who are a big bundle of joy, and in fact, they have the most amount of enthusiasm and energy. Sometimes they seem a bit off or dull. The reasons behind dullness or loss of strength, or loss of vigor are manifold. In today’s blog, let’s dive into the ocean of strength and vigor. Yes, today, we will understand vitality in pets and the multifaceted reasons behind any abnormal behavior. Why is my dog so upset? Is he sad? Why is my pet so dull? Why is my pet howling or moaning? If you have ever had such doubts, you have come to the right place. Let’s uncover the knowledge of vital strength!

Vitality: The Strength And Enthusiasm

Vitality is a kind of life force that is manifested in terms of happiness, vigor, strength, and enthusiasm as a whole. It is, in fact, measured in terms of ‘Liveliness’ which means how active they are in terms of living. Wait, this is kind of confusing? How do we measure liveliness?

Liveliness or vitality is seen in behavior. Yes, you can observe and measure liveliness or vitality in terms of how your pet behaves, whether or not that behavior is abnormal, and if so, how abnormal or ‘different’ your pet is acting.

Vital energy is also termed as the life force, which is an essential element of life, and good health or perfect health is the fine balance of this vital energy. This vital energy flows within the living organisms and helps to maintain balance among psychological, physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Whether my pet is strong or weak is based upon this – The Vital Energy. Most of our energy is derived from vitality or vital power more than muscles. You may have observed instances where a young dog or small-breed dog overpowers bigger, muscular dogs. Why does this happen? Of course, self-confidence comes into the picture here, which is again a facet of vitality. The strength of vitality is one of the key strengths that are most correlated with happiness and wellbeing. There are many different types of strengths. Here are some examples:

  1. Curiosity
  2. Interest
  3. Hope
  4. Optimism & Positive outlook
  5. Gratitude
  6. The capacity to loving

Core Of Vitality

  1. We have heard about boosting vitality by boosting immunity. In fact, vitality is like a building that has immunity as its foundational base. This building also possesses certain pillars, of which there are 5 core pillars. These pillars are essential to make a healthy living. Here are 5 most important pillars of vitality:
    1. Nutrition
    2. Exercise
    3. Sleep
    4. Resilience and Stress- free environment
    5. Connection & Bonding

Let us have a quick look into how these pillars strengthen vitality building.

1. Nutrition

Nutrition is defined as the study of nutrients in food and how the body uses them, and it also includes the relationship between diet, health, and disease. We all know the importance of good nutrition in our well being and health. In fact, many diseases can be kept at bay with good nutritional practices. Good fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, along with a balanced amount of minerals and vitamins, are essential to building vigor and boosting vitality.

Vitamins and nutrients help to improve energy. Mineral depletion can result in chronic fatigue and depression as a result, causes depressed immunity, which essentially means vitality is hampered. Zinc, magnesium, Calcium, and Iron are some of the important minerals useful in building vitality. Certain vitamins like B complex vitamins are well-known for their role in boosting energy. Some other vitamins, such as vitamins C and E, and vitamin D are also extremely helpful. A certain variety of plants or herbs too are helpful in boosting vitality. For example- Basil [Hindi- Tulsi], and Curcumin [Hindi- Haldi] has a similarly wide range of health benefits.

2. Exercise

Exercise plays a huge role in building immunity in your pets. A series of regular exercises enhances immune response. However, it’s important to note here that overexertion or strenuous exercise results in oxidative damage to the cells and will have a backfire effect, increasing the susceptibility to infections.

Anything in excess is harmful. Thus, regular walks, and regular exercise are important. Consistency is the key. Remember, the Quality of exercise is much more important than the quantity of exercise. Also, not every pet or every dog will have the same levels of exercise needs.

Here’s what you can do –

  1. Daily walks 2-4 times per day to refresh them and give them relief from holding their bladder.
  2. Playing with balls/toys
  3. Running in the backyard
  4. Going on hikes or short jog
  5. Toys and play area for puppies and kittens

It is important to note that you never exercise your pets immediately before or after food as, again, it will have harmful effects on your pet’s system. Exercise should always be moderated and done in proper quantities.

3. Sleep

Sleep or rest is very important as it helps with cognition, concentration, productivity, energy conservation, and modulation of immune responses, performance, vigilance, disease, and psychological wellbeing. Sleep plays an important role in your physical health. Sleep is involved in the healing and repairing process. Sleep is also very important for boosting Immune System.

4. Resilience And Stress-Free Environment.

Resilience is the ability to mentally or emotionally cope with a crisis or to return to pre-crisis status quickly. This essentially is in-built most of the time and is also built up while facing stress. Sudden stress will lead to the release of adrenaline that will suppress the immune response. Long-term stress causes the release of cortisol, which is also immunosuppressive at high levels. Any kind of physical or emotional stress affects your pets adversely, for example – a sudden change of atmosphere and environment, severe weather changes (extremely high temperature, extremely low temperature), traveling, excessive handling, trauma, illness, pregnancy, boarding, etc.

5. Connection And Bonding

Bonding is the process of the development of a close, interpersonal relationship. A strong bond forms the foundation of your entire relationship with your dog. It is one of the important pillars of boosting vitality as it improves mental and psychological wellbeing, which in turn improves the physical wellbeing of your pet.

Connecting and bonding are thus crucial for building vitality. You can connect and bond with your pets by doing various activities such as playing fetch, going on hikes or short walks, talking to them, praising them, and spending some quality time with them. This process helps your dog feel refreshed and energetic.

talking to them, praising them, and spending some quality time with them. This process helps your dog feel refreshed and energetic.

The Reasons Behind The Fall In Vitality

Vitality can be affected by numerous causes. The foremost runners are diseases and illness. Health is defined as complete physical, emotional, social, and mental wellbeing. If any of these 4 aspects are hampered, your pet might fall into the category of being diseased [Dis-Ease, which means not at ease or comfort]

We can ensure our pets’ good physical health by following the 4 steps to physical wellness

1. General checkups

Once every 8-12 months, it’s a good practice to take your furry friend to the veterinarian to ensure your furry baby is scanned thoroughly for any ailments or physical diseases. Your Vet may suggest routine blood work and fecal tests to make sure your pet is healthy. They may also suggest grooming at timely intervals [like nail trimming, baths, and ear cleaning]

2. Routine Deworming

It is a good practice to follow the deworming schedule as prescribed by your Vet. Generally, adults are dewormed once every 3 to 4 months as it prevents scope for any endoparasitic infections such as tapeworms, roundworms, etc.

3. Vaccination

We must follow this yearly vaccination schedule to prevent many of the notorious diseases such as gastrointestinal infections, etc

4. Exercises

As mentioned before, exercise is important to keep diseases such as obesity and lethargy at bay and boost vitality immensely.

Cough & Cold Respiratory Distress Put To Rest

One thing which both pet parents, as well as our pets, dread is the flu season; sneezing, coughing, and of course, having respiratory distress. Have you ever wondered why exactly we get sick? What exactly causes coughing? Coughing and sneezing are very natural mechanisms to get the irritant out of our respiratory system, but sometimes the coughing and sneezing mechanisms are intertwined with the mechanism of our body to help get rid of pathogens!
Also, not every cough is related to the flu as there are many other reasons too.
Do not worry. Through this blog, let’s have a look at what goes behind the scenes- why my pet has a cough & cold and what we can do to help our pets.

What Is Coughing?

A cough, also medically termed as ‘tussis’, is a voluntary or involuntary act that clears the throat and respiratory or the breathing passage of foreign agents such as microbes, pollutants, irritants, fluids, and mucus. It is a rapid expulsion of air from the lungs as a reflex action or deliberate action.

Coughing & Its Importance

There are minute intricate systems that work hand in hand to help our bodies stay fit and fine. One such system is the physical barriers such as cilia/ hair/ etc, which are present on the mucous membrane of the nose, which helps prevent the pathogen from entering the body. On irritation of these, there is a reflex sneeze that expels the pathogen out. However, this is just a tiny example of what our body is capable of doing! Let’s now understand what coughing is and its importance.

DefenseMechanism

Cough helps and aids the body to get rid of pathogens [which causes diseases] by providing protection and also aids in clearing the airway [trachea-bronchial tree]

1. Fight against Pathogen

The coughing mechanism of our body is helpful in hinting at a probable infection. As the infection rises, there is more cough and cold as the body tries to compensate and fight against the micro-organism. On the flip side, as the infection falls, or as the immunity builds, the cough and cold levels start dropping down, which again helps us to realize that the infection has been cured or minimized to a greater extent.

2. Coughing can transmit Pathogens.

Coughing and sneezing, although normal, have the capability to transmit bacteria, and viruses [that is, if the root cause of coughing is indeed a disease-causing pathogen]. Although, normal sneeze and cough due to allergens [dust, dander, allergy-causing items] may not particularly pose a threat of transmitting any bacteria/viruses.
For example: If a Dog or a puppy has Kennel Cough disease. One of the most common culprits for kennel cough is a bacterium called Bordetella bronchiseptica, although the coughing could be triggered due to viruses as well, such as Canine Adenovirus, Influenza Virus, and Parainfluenza Viruses.

If a healthy dog comes in contact with a coughing dog that has been diagnosed with kennel cough, it’s pretty obvious that the healthy dog might get an infection. It’s important to note that to prevent this from happening, always routinely vaccinate your dogs against such viruses so that immunity builds up and your dog has fewer chances of falling seriously ill.

Tip – A persistent cough during the evening or night hours indicates heart problems [Serious and life-threatening conditions such as pulmonary embolism or Congestive heart Failure] so it’s best to get your pet diagnosed at the earliest for any doubts about the cause of coughing/wheezing.

What Signs Should I Look Out For?

Coughing could be because of the influenza virus causing normal seasonal flu to life-threatening conditions such as CHF or Allergic reaction. It’s best to get your pet diagnosed at the earliest to avoid any future obstacles in the recovery phase.

Keep an eye on –

A. Type of Cough: Dry Cough [without sputum or mucus being expectorated/ coming out from throat or Productive Cough [with sputum/ mucus accompanying coughing]

  1. Dry cough- could be because of asthma or allergy. Other causative factors involve viral respiratory infections. In kennel cough, particularly, there is a honking type of coughing.
  2. Productive cough – it could be because of respiratory infections, pneumonia, bronchiectasis, etc.

B. The period of coughing. I.e., whether the cough lasts for a few hours or more than a few days or worsens as time passes by.

  1. Acute Cough: If the cough lasts only for a few hours and subsides, then it’s an acute cough
  2. Chronic Cough: If it lasts for more than a few weeks, it may be a chronic cough due to some health issues.

Generally, allergens cause short-term coughs. Even some mild respiratory infections last for a few days. Prolonged coughing needs to be diagnosed thoroughly as the causative factor could be the heart itself. Thus proper medical help should be sought out at the earliest to rule out or rule in cardiac complications and cardiac diseases.

C. Behavioral Aspects- If your pet is depressed or seems extra tired if they have Anorexia – i.e., they won’t eat.

D. Rise in temperature – Keep an eye on whether they have a fever. This could be easily attributed to infectious disease progression.

Diagnosis: Finding The Root Cause.

The Diagnosis is generally based on the type of cough, its consistency of it, and the time period your veterinarian will diagnose your pet on the basis of some tests

BLOOD PANEL

Your Vet may suggest a routine blood checkup to rule out or rule in Infections. A complete blood count test (CBC) gives a clear picture of the blood cells and whether there’s an infection going on in the body.

X-RAY

X-Ray is an extremely handy diagnostic tool as it can check the lung patterns and even the heart for any lesion which may cause coughing in your pets.

History

Based on the history of signs and symptoms that your pet may be exhibiting, a good diagnosis can be made. Diagnosis is based partly on history as well! Hence it’s essential that you give a proper and complete history of the signs that your pet exhibits.

Ie. If with coughing you notice any other signs and symptoms and if there are any other concerns, which you may have, they should be promptly expressed to your Vet.

Respiratory Distress Put To Rest: Treatment Protocols

Treatment is based on diagnosing. Thus Diagnosis is key. If your pet has coughing due to Respiratory causes, your Vet may suggest antibiotics, fluids, and other such medicines for your pet.

In cases of other reasons such as allergies, the coughing generally subsides when the causative irritant is removed (like pollen/cigarette or vehicle smoke, etc.)

On the other hand, for coughing caused due to heart problems, the treatment protocol is totally different and focuses primarily on resolving the heart disease to subsequently resolve the coughing problem.

Iron: No Anaemia Or Dullness Only Strength & Alertness

There are many minute intricate network systems in our body, and one of them is the organs and blood network. Blood is the life-giving force that carries oxygen to all minute tissues of organs and also carries waste products from tissues to the lungs or excretory organs to expel out of the body. Blood vessels, along with the heart as a system, are termed the Cardio-Vascular System and are an extremely important system. Sometimes, these systems may malfunction due to some kind of foreign antigen or pathogens which may cause life-threatening infections and cause the entire system to be deranged. As we know, our Cardiovascular system particularly is an extremely important core system, and any malfunctioning bits of this system may prove life-threatening.
Today let’s dive into the world of this beautiful system as today we will touch upon one important aspect of this system- Anemia and Iron deficiency. What is anemia? How does it manifest? What are the signs and symptoms observed? Let’s dive straight into the topic.

Anemia: What Is Anemia?

We have all come across the term ‘Anemia,’ which essentially means a condition in which the blood doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells.
In medical terms, it is defined as a decrease in the total amount of red blood cells (RBCs) or Hemoglobin in the blood or a lowered ability of the blood to carry oxygen. RBC or red blood cells are a kind of cells that carry or deliver oxygen to the body tissues—via blood flow through the circulatory system, whereas Hemoglobin is a protein found in the red blood cells that carry oxygen in your body
Fun fact: The blood has red color due to Hemoglobin!

Reasons Behind Anemia

Anemia, as such is a disease that has many reasons behind it. It itself hints at some infectious process or any metabolic or nutrient derangement such as lowered levels of B vitamins, and iron level imbalance. As mentioned before, it has multiple facets. Let’s understand the significant root causes of anemia

There are many reasons for anemia the significant ones include the following:

    1. Dietary Deficiency of Iron, Vitamin B complex, and Folic Acid
    2. Increased Destruction of RBCs: Hemolysis due to infection, etc.
    3. Lowered production of RBC: Bone Marrow disorders
    4. Loss of blood: Hemorrhagic conditions
    5. Immune system disorder: Immune-mediated haemolysis
    6. Malabsorption of dietary compounds
    7. Infections

Let’s understand these causes of anemia in detail:

Dietary Deficiency& Malabsorption

It is also termed iron deficiency anemia which occurs due to insufficient iron. Your body needs iron to make Hemoglobin which is a protein that helps carry fresh oxygen to various tissues and other gases such as carbon dioxide out of the tissues to the lungs to expel. It majorly occurs when your body doesn’t have enough iron in your diet, and without enough iron, your body can’t produce enough Hemoglobin in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen (Hemoglobin), thus causing a series of health issues.

It is also caused due to an ulcer in the gastrointestinal tract, which can cause inflammation of the stomach lining resulting in blood loss, which again could be due to many reasons or due to acute blood loss, such as from hemorrhage.

Apart from iron, the body also needs folate and vitamin B-12 to produce good and healthy red blood cells. A deficiency of any of these compounds in diet may lead to anemia.

Apart from reduced dietary intake, the issue could also be due to malabsorption of the compounds from the intestines, which leads to a condition termed pernicious anemia.

1. INCREASED DESTRUCTION OF RBCs

RBCs can be destroyed due to many reasons. The foremost runner of the increased destruction of RBCs are pathogens or blood parasites such as Babesia, Ehrlichia which are known to cause a disease commonly called Tick Fever or it may be due to an autoimmune problem in which the immune system mistakenly sees your own red blood cells as foreign substances and destroys them. Certain chemicals or toxins, e.g., zinc, rat poisons, onions, or garlic, can cause immense hemolysis and thus increase the level of RBC destruction.

2. LOWERED PRODUCTION OF RBCs

RBCs are produced in the bone marrow of long bones.

Diseases and conditions that cause your body to produce less amount of red blood cells include Any severe or chronic, i.e., long-lasting diseases such as chronic kidney or liver disease, aplastic anaemia, or Cancer, chemicals or toxins autoimmune disease, hypothyroidism may lead to decreased RBCs production

3. BLOOD LOSS

It could be due to many reasons, such as ulceration or viral disease, which attacks the intestine cells and cause bleeding due to invasive processes, for example, Parvo-viral diarrhea. It may also be due to hemorrhagic conditions.

4. IMMUNE-MEDIATED DISORDERS

IMHA or immune-mediated hemolytic anemia is a disease in which the immune system reacts against red cells and causes the untimely destruction of RBCs.

The immune system is actually responsible for the killing of non-self-invader cells, but due to some deranged mechanism, the immune system acts on self RBCs. As a result, red cells are destroyed, thus resulting in anemia, causing oxygen delivery to be greatly reduced.

WATCH OUT FOR THESE SUBTLE SIGNS

Anemia is a disorder that can’t be quickly noticed due to the subtle nature of the disease process. We often observe signs and symptoms after a considerable amount of time has passed. Sometimes we are able to observe the signs in the initial phase of a disease process.

1. Tiredness & Lethargy

Lethargy is a lack of energy and enthusiasm, which can be a non-specific sign as many of the disease processes do make your pet tired and dull.

Also, your pet may exhibit signs of getting tired quickly and may seem to be a bit dull after short walks or, in general, exhibit signs of a lack of enthusiasm to play with toys, etc.

2. Pale Mucous Membranes and associated CRT

Your vet on check-up may check the mucus membranes of your pet, like, for example, the gums or inner ear or conjunctiva to check its color. A Pink colored mucus membrane is considered to be normal and healthy. Whereas pale mucus membrane often hints at anemia. CRT is a diagnostic aid where your vet checks for the Capillary Refill Time to understand the level of anemia.

1. Your pet may also experience headaches due to anemia, but again, we rely on the mucus membranes and non-specific signs to understand the reason behind them. It surely is a task, but it is often coupled with other disease processes too. If your pet has some infection, they may exhibit signs of:

I]vomiting

Ii] Diarrhea

Iii] Anorexia etc.

Often if your pet is diagnosed with tick fever, ulceration, bleeding disorder or hemorrhage, etc., it’s pretty obvious anemia will follow

FIGHTING ANAEMIA: WHAT IS THE PROTOCOL?

Anemia is first diagnosed based on the blood picture. What is a blood picture? Basically, your veterinarian will carry out blood tests: CBC [complete blood count], which gives an idea about the red blood cells [RBCs], white blood cells [WBCs], and platelets [thrombocytes]. Any decrease in PCV, or packed cell volume can give an indication of the disease or metabolic process. Your doctor will rule out or rule in various causes of anemia, mentioned: Toxicity, Infections [Tick Fever], aplastic anemia, pernicious anemia [malabsorption], or dietary deficiency of folate, iron, and b-complex vitamins.

The very base of diagnosing is history. Your veterinarian may ask certain questions like-

Is your dog/cat vomiting?

Since when is your pet acting lethargic and dull?

Did you find ticks on the body of your dog?

Is there any diarrhea?

Apart from history taking, your veterinarian shall also carry out the CRT or the capillary refill time test and will also check the mucus membranes such as the gums or ear pinna or the conjunctiva. This will give a fair idea if your dog/cat is suffering from anemia. Later on, the firm diagnosis will be based on the blood reports which come in. Apart from CBC or complete blood count, your veterinarian will also suggest LFT/KFT, ie. Liver function test and Kidney function test to have a look at how the liver and kidney are working, if they’re normal or having some sort of infection, etc.

Treatment Protocols: Medicines & Supplements

The treatment is usually based on the disease which has been diagnosed. Treating the root cause of anemia, or in short, curing disease at the grassroots level, will cure the entire disease, which manifests on a much larger scale. The treatment for anaemia is thus different for different kinds of anaemia. The disease is one, but the path leading to it is different, and thus, the treatment will obviously vary. For example, if your pet has severe anaemia and is almost life-threatening, a blood transfusion will be needed. Your veterinarian will let you know the protocol for the same. The main purpose is to stabilize the dog while diagnosing the reason behind it.

When a firm diagnosis is made, the treatment may include antibiotics such as doxycycline for tick-fever or infectious causes, corticosteroids, de-worming medications, i.e., anti-helminthic drugs like praziquantel, fenbendazole, etc. vitamin K1, which is very crucial for controlling hemorrhage in case of rodenticide toxicities, etc. thus; the treatment protocol is altered based on the need of the hour.
