Is Your Pet is Facing Fever? Managing with Homeopathic Remedy

We all love our pets and treat them as our beloved family members. We play, eat, sleep, and even get envious when they are not around or not interested in playing with us. Our life revolves around our pets’ misbehavior every day. There wouldn’t be a day without our pet creating its own magical spell on us. However, sometimes we notice our pets are not so active, with not much interest in playing or eating, and seem to be comparatively dull and lethargic than the previous day.

What is happening with my pet?

I am sure, we all must have experienced the feeling of helplessness when our pet is dull, suffering from anorexia, inactive, suddenly behaves oddly, and we don’t know what actually went wrong. Then keeping an eye on our pet’s temperature, anxiety, and weakness is important. Sometimes, we can notice an obvious increase in body temperature as we touch them. This increase in body temperature can be evident only when we know the normal body temperature of our pet on a daily basis.

This increase in body temperature above the normal range is termed Pyrexia or Fever.

There are certain conditions where there is an increase in body temperature but it cannot be termed as Pyrexia or Fever like in the case of Hyperthermia.

WHAT IS THE BASIC DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PYREXIA AND HYPERTHERMIA?

Hyperthermia is an increase in the core body temperature due to the failure of the thermoregulatory mechanism in the body. Whereas, Pyrexia or Fever is an increase in the body temperature above the normal range, which is induced by the activation of cytokines due to pyrogens.

Fun Fact – Our brain has an amazing part called the Hypothalamus which acts as a natural heater and also as an air conditioner. It keeps a balance between heat and cold and keeps our body at a balanced steady temperature.

In simpler terms, fever is like a defense mechanism that nature has provided in the body to ward off infection and is in fact induced by the infection itself! How strange does nature work, right?

IS FEVER BAD OR GOOD FOR THE BODY?

In the initial phases of an active infection, yes, fever is kind of good for the body as few bacteria do not survive at high temperatures. However, it is interesting to note that there are certain limitations to this. Many adverse effects of fever include –

Increased oxygen consumption along with increased carbon dioxide production.
An increase in energy consumption as metabolism hastened an increased cardiac output.
Decreased appetite and dullness are also evident.
With an increase in temperature, there are chances of multiple organ failure in severe cases.

HOW TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN PYREXIA AND HYPERTHERMIA IN PETS?

Hyperthermia word actually means –

Hyper: Increased and Thermia: Temperature.

If your pet has had vigorous exercise, body temperature increases tremendously, and so to cool off, the pet pants and drinks water and tries to isolate itself for a while to rest. At that moment, a slight increase in the body temperature above normal is seen and is not a serious concern as the body is trying to reset to the normal body temperature range.

Other possible causes of Hyperthermia may include – Heat Stroke / Drug Allergy / Seizure disorder and Hyper Metabolic Disease.

💡 Watch out – Hyperthermia due to exercise generally lasts only for a couple of minutes to a half-an-hour until the animal cools itself off. If your pet is still uncomfortable and showing high temperature, it may be an indication that something else is at play and it could be a fever.

To detect if your dog has a fever or pyrexia, you can check the rectal temperature of your pet with the help of a digital thermometer.

The normal range of rectal temperature is as follows –

For Dogs and Cats: 101°-102.5°Fahrenheit // 38.3°-39.2°Celsius
Younger animals (puppies or kittens) may show temperatures slightly higher than adults i.e around 101.5-103.5°Fahrenheit // 38.6-39.4°Celsius

To help you confirm that your dog is obviously ill due to some underlying reason in the body, apart from an increase in rectal temperature/body temperature do check out for the following symptoms –

SYMPTOM #1– LETHARGY

If your pet is dull, unwilling to play, and isolates itself, it can be your first alarm, which says something is wrong with your pet.

SYMPTOM #2– ANOREXIA

Your animal rejects food. Their food bowl even though filled with their favorite food like chicken or milk doesn’t impress them. Your animal doesn’t eat or in fact, even do not bother to look at their food bowl at all.

Occasionally your pet may drink water, but in some cases, they even start rejecting water too.

SYMPTOM #3 – DEPRESSION

Your pet tends to hide under the bed or starts isolating themselves from the family. Nothing interests them. No toys, and no food. This is an obvious symptom.

SYMPTOM #4 – HYPERPNOEA

Hyperpnoea means an increase in the breathing rate. Due to an increase in the body temperature, there is an increase in the breathing rate as the body tries to get rid of the excess heat through panting or the breathing process.

Fun Fact– Humans lose excess body heat via sweating, breathing/panting mechanism.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF PYREXIA OR FEVER?

There are many reasons why your loving pet is showing pyrexia and classical symptoms of illness.

Here are some of the causes –

There is an active bacterial infection.

Bacteria are microscopic organisms that invade living body cells and multiply to spread further and consume the bodily enzymes, oxygen, or energy reserves to thrive. It causes massive destruction of tissues and localizes in one organ or multiple organs or on the body surface depending upon the type of bacteria affecting your pet.

Infectious diseases such as systemic bacterial infections or bacteremia i.e. bacteria being detected in the blood (from any source in the body) can cause a response in the pet’s body as fever since the pet’s body is trying to fight off these foreign bacteria.

Examples include leptospirosis, pyometra, gastritis, enteritis, or abscess formation in some body parts.

Fun Fact – The body tries to ward off infection by increasing body temperature since most bacterial agents cannot survive in high temperatures.

However, it is interesting to note that – not all bacterias die within the increased body temperature and a prolonged period of high fever is dangerous to a pet’s body.

Viral Infections

Just like bacteria, the virus too induces Pyrexia. Since the virus is also a foreign object to the body, the host immunity system gets activated to work against these organisms.

Examples – Parvovirus, Adenovirus, Poxvirus

Fungal Infections

Fungi are also microscopic organisms that are capable of causing pyrexia due to their ability to destroy host cells triggering an immune response.

Examples of Fungal organisms include aspergillus, candida species, etc.

Protozoal infections

Protozoa too are a kind of microorganisms that target certain specific body organs or systems.

For example, Entamoeba targets the intestines and causes loose motions or diarrhea with severe pain in the abdomen. Similarly, there are many protozoal organisms such as Theileria, and Leishmania that trigger pyrexia.

Inflammatory Diseases

Inflammatory diseases refer to the inflammatory conditions of one or many tissues of various organs, such as hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) or gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestine), or pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) which also can induce body response in the form of pyrexia.

HOW SHOULD I TAKE CARE OF MY PET IF THEY HAVE FEVER?

In case the fever is nonspecific and persistently high, your vet will try to figure out the cause and give your pet the conventional treatment to treat the underlying cause of the fever.
You can try to bring the temperature down by applying a water-soaked towel or cotton balls around the ears and paws.
Ensure that your pet has access to fresh water and encourage them to drink enough water (in case they’re anorectic).
Monitor your dog closely and visit the vet in case the fever recurs even after the initial treatment.
There are often certain cases in dogs, where the fever is non-specific i.e. we do not know why our pet has a fever. This is medically termed “FUO – Fever of Unknown Origin.”

WHAT KIND OF FOOD IS PREFERRED WHEN MY PET IS SICK HAVING PYREXIA?

Food that is easily digestible, and light to the body yet, nourishing at the same time must be preferred.

We have to ensure that our beloved pet is given the utmost love, care, and attention when they are sick. So along with their normal packaged food, you can try out these other options too.

In case your pet is eating little food, here’s what you should do –

Do not give him/her fried oily or spicy food as we humans eat.
For pet dogs kept on a veg diet, milk mixed with a little turmeric can be offered in small quantities.

In general, pets should be offered chicken soup and rice with small chicken pieces in it.

Chicken scratches – you can take a chicken piece and shred it and offer the shredded pieces to your pet.

TREATMENT AND MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF PYREXIA-

Conventionally, the protocol that is followed for pyrexia is as follows –

Your vet will suggest certain blood tests to check out the blood picture to rule out any certain underlying infections. For example, CBC, LFT, KFT, and serum biochemistry tests can be done. To rule out any other causes, further advanced tests may be conducted based on the blood profile obtained in the previous tests.

Antibiotic regime – for a minimum period of 5 days, antibiotics are given according to the kind of infection/abscess detected.

Antibiotics are medicines that fight and kill the bacteria which are multiplying and damaging the body tissues and cells.

Supportive therapy – if the pet does not consume even water, suffers from diarrhea or vomitions, or is weak even to walk, then, your vet may suggest fluid therapy to your pet dog.

This fluid saline brings back the normal fluid balance of the body and prevents the organ system or the entire body in general from getting dehydrated and going into a shock-like state.

Fluid saline in severe anorectic cases can be added with B-complex vitamins, calcium supplements, multivitamins, liver tonics, etc., according to the severity of the condition of the pet.

Where the tonics help to regularise the normal systemic functions like digestion, defecation, etc., multivitamin syrups or tablets help to increase immunity and fight back the system of the body.
